Introduction

Bob & Christina graciously hosted an evening of American Syrah.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

As everyone arrived (and we heard news of 50), we sipped on a couple of lovelies.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvee Edition 170eme France, Champagne
Surprisingly young, taut, crisp and mineral.

White
2021 Château Ducasse Blanc France, Bordeaux
Mmm, I haven't had a Ducasse Blanc in years, always a nice Kermit Lynch import. This was great, huge energy, strong Sauvignon Blanc personality on the nose with grassiness and minerality but nice fullness, length and richness from the Sémillon.

Flight 2 - FLIGHT 1 (3 notes)

Red
1972 Parducci Petite Sirah USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
Smoky, vitamin. Very silky, showing age, very nice acidity. That had me thinking Washington. I would never have guessed a 1972 Petite Sirah!

Red
2017 XOBC Cellars Syrah Catherine USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
Super smoky, obvious Rocks funk, nice acidity and grip. Apparently the XOBC wines are made by the Rotie Cellars team for Brandi Carlile.

Red
2017 Avennia Syrah Le Corbeau Discovery Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills
Ripe, blackberry. Heavy. Makes me think Red Mountain, maybe Betz? Some heat, blocky, black fruit. Ends up as Avennia.

Flight 3 - FLIGHT 2 (3 notes)

Served with dinner, a great roast, nice job Bob!

Red
2019 Delmas Syrah SJR Vineyard USA, Oregon, The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater
Super smoky, really seems like Walla Walla, super cherry, vibrant, savory and roasted. Young but nice showing.

Red
2017 Rôtie Cellars Northern Blend USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
Muddy and a bit reductive. Blueberry and blackberry. Dense and fairly unyielding at this stage. Really wants a LOT of air.

Red
2017 J. Dusi Syrah Caterina's Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Cinnamon red hots, very sweet. Spicy. Seemed like Central Coast Cali for sure.

Flight 4 - FLIGHT 3 (3 notes)

Pretty monstrous.

Red
2008 Cayuse Syrah Armada Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
An obvious Cayuse nose. Heavy, savory and spicy.

Red
2017 DuMOL Syrah Eddie's Patch USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
DEEP, dark color, spicecake, Reminds me of SQN, obvious California, I again thought Central Coast. Dusty tannins.

Red
2016 K Vintners Syrah Phil Lane USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
Weird nose, stalky, charcoal. Complex palate, celery seed. Tannic. Pretty interesting and funky, really divided the group.

Flight 5 - FLIGHT 4 (3 notes)

Red
2004 Stags' Leap Winery Petite Sirah USA, California, Napa Valley
Spice cake, chemical smell, pretty palate, actually quite interesting. Again with another Petite Sirah (and the funky California Petite Syrah spelling).

Red
2007 Sine Qua Non Syrah Dangerous Birds USA, California, Central Coast
Big, polished, endlessly deep, long, definite sweetness. Just massive. Years to go.

Red
2005 K Vintners Syrah Old Bones USA, Washington
Monster, spicy, SQN lite, wow. Super intense, not necessarily in a good way. Almost over the top.

Flight 6 - DESSERT (1 note)

Red - Fortified
1970 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
Mmm, spicy, nice maturity. Actually lighter in intensity (and less sweet) than many of the wines from tonight...
