Introduction

A couple of small brackets of Bordeaux just to get myself into shape for tomorrow's nights Bordeaux dinner with United Cellars and to continue the hunt for Christmas candidates.

All wines were left in the glass for 15-30 minutes post pouring.

Flight 1 - 2000 (3 notes)

the first wine was four times cheaper than the second wine which was four times cheaper than the last one. A little "can you smell/taste the quality difference" game which proved quite informative…short answer is "yes, yes you can"

Red
2000 Château de Chantegrive Graves France, Bordeaux, Graves
From Coravin. Brambles, plums, a little red and blackcurrant, slight earth and mud, leather, touch of smoky minerality, smidge of umami, mushrooms and sous bois. Juicy, savoury, those umami, sous bois notes more to the fore on the palate backed by the fruit, touch of fruit tea, textured grip persists long. Nice.
Red
2000 Château Citran France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
From Coravin. Touch of pretty red cherry, plum, sweet spice, a very slight herbaceous note, leather, and cigar box, a little blood/iron note. Medium plus intensity acidity, savoury cherry, a little leather, cigar box, plums and sweet spice in support, tannins are drying and tight but work with the flavours. Long. Yum
Red
2000 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
From Coravin. Blackcurrant, a little bramble, plum, sweet spice, polished oak, slight clay, biscuit, toast, cedar. Medium plus intensity acidity, blackcurrant and cassis with a slight umami underpin, silky tannins are integrated, exceedingly harmonious and dangerously drinkable. in a very good spot for me. Travels very long. Excellent.

Flight 2 - 2002 (4 notes)

Another example of one of those "average/bad" vintages (according to the critics) that have come along rather nicely and show exceedingly pleasant now, 20 years later

Red
2002 Château La Tour Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
From Coravin. Brambles, plums, biscuit, a little herbaceous note, smidge of red currant, leather, slight wet earth, Autumn forest floor, slight aniseed. Juicy, savoury, the red currant, lends freshness to the black hued fruit, very slight herbaceous notes here as well, tannins are grainy but in support. Long, very good.
Red
2002 Château d'Angludet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Medium plus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, slight cassis and wood glue note, leather, caramel, slight almost toffee apple (oddly) and red currant, slight forest floor, damp leaf note. Medium plus intensity acidity, plenty of drying chalky tannins close down the palate, slightly thought flavours of currant, cedar, leathery and earthy notes, slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. nice though.
Red
2002 Château Rauzan-Ségla France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Leather, earth, brambles, blackcurrant, bretty farmyard notes, savoury and meaty as well, a little pyrazine, pencil shavings, a little cigar box, slightly peppery spice. Juicy, savoury, chewy tannins prove leather, Brett here as well, fruit slightly stripped after the nose, pencil shavings, quite dense, nice nose but probably time to tidy this up based on the palate.
Red
2002 Château Duhart-Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
From Coravin. Brambles, slight plum, a little almost fresh raspberry notes, sweet spice contrasts with a savoury bacon fat, a little leather, tobacco leaf and cedar here as well as some polished oak. In this line up this feels a little more red hued and green, slightly hard and four square, drying, flour textured tannins, a little cedar. medium plus length. Hmm.
