Introduction

A run through of Priorat and its producers

Flight 1 - Unusual Xarel-lo (1 note)

Orange
2005 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat Cartoixa Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
87 points
A crisp, refreshing wine from Xarel-lo grape variety with lots of minerals, nuts, honey and spice. There is a Chardonnay-esque feel to the wine. With vibrant acidity, and medium intensity, the wine is well-balanced with a mineral edge to the medium finish. Some richness and nuts with an overarching aromatic appeal.

Flight 2 - No particular order (4 notes)

Red
2003 Mas Martinet Priorat Clos Martinet Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
From a hot vintage., this medium to deep ruby coloured wine has a warm nose that is open-knit with some gentle floral tints, wet soil, truffles, farmyard and some oak nuances.
A fresh entry with lively, mineral acidity, the warm alcohol pierces through, making the wine almost feel cumbersome but remains balanced. Fairly intense with chewy tannins, the new oak is front and centre. Surprising.
Red
2001 Clos Erasmus Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
93 points
Medium to deep cherry red running to an orange rim. Again, quite intense wood overtones that join with woodsmoke, cigar box, raisin and 'port-like' fruits - spiced orange, fruitcake and balsamic - with a mineral note.
Richly textured, this is a big massive wine with high alcohol filled with raisin, fig, spice, blackberries, tobacco, liquorice, candied orange and port notes as per nose. Intensely flavours, this full-bodied wine is supported by gravelly tannins and a mineral edge typical of Priorat. The back palate gives way to a lovely floral note that shows liquorice allsorts. However, I detected a little bit of volatile acidity or perhaps balsamic?

2003 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat L'Arbossar Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
88 points
60 yr old Carinena vines planted on Llicorella soil, this medium to deep ruby-coloured wine is lifted with white pepper, red cherry, pastry and oak spices.
A richly textured, full-bodied wine backed by fresh, lively acidity. The alcohol feels warm and spiky, whilst the tannins are somewhat mineral but gently undulating. Lacks a bit of punch in the mid-palate with flavours of tinned cherry, plenty of oak and spices. The finish falls away and despite the lively acidity the wine feels it might have needed more to make it through the hotter 2003 vintage.
Red
2002 Costers del Siurana Priorat Clos de L'Obac Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
Mid to deep garnet the bouquet delivers a broad spectrum of spices with cardamon and star anise - like walking into an Indian spice shop. There is ripe red cherry, nut, mineral and blackberry.
A silky smooth entry, richly fruited with a medium acidity and warm, integrated alcohol. Full-bodied, the wine feels relatively light on its feet and is elegant but lacks some depth offering fleshy raspberry, mineral and black cherry framed by grainy, ripe tannins. The soft oaky notes feel entirely accented and over-toasty, and less appealing.

Flight 3 - No particular order (3 notes)

Red
2003 Cims de Porrera Priorat Solanes Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
Mid garnet to cherry in colour, the bouquet shows more development with tertiary notes interspersed with white pepper, marinated raspberries, morello cherry and liqueur chocolates.
The entry is rich with lively mineral-edged acidity and firm, horizontal tannins. The soft, plush mid-palate broadens out and is filled with plenty of baked fruits, expresso (oak), vanilla and truffle notes, is wonderfully intense and has a warming, spice-edged alcohol. Complex with depth and a long farewell.

2003 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat Dits del Terra Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
87 points
Deep ruby colour, with aromas of ripe red and black fruit, cedarwood, pepper and mineral.
A sweet fruity entry, intense with a rich texture balanced by vibrant acidity. A mix of raspberry, dried cranberries, raisin, smoked spices and warm gravel, with good mid-palate depth. Medium-bodied, there is some depth but the tannins feel hard and impenetrable and the wine feels somewhat tight yet has some complexity at this stage.
Red
2000 Cims de Porrera Priorat Classic Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
85 points
Deep garnet colour with a narrow orange rim, the wine shows some development but also some acetone and volatile elements. A dried fruit, raisin led nose suggesting overripe, and the entry is full-bodied and powerful. Hot spiky alcohol pushes through on this powerful wine, and the tannins feel rigid and coarse. The mid-palate offers some damson and black plum, but overall, the wine lacks much elegance, and I detected as the wine opened further some oxidative notes.
