Introduction

An overview of Rieslings from around the world

Flight 1 - 2 Alsace and one other (4 notes)

White
2002 Peter Lehmann Riesling Eden Valley Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
88 points
12% alc the colour is pale lemon; aromas is floral-based with lime, green apple, wax and mineral.
Intense and bright on entry, this light to medium-bodied Riesling reflects the New World. With crisp acidity and bone-dry palate, the wine has notes of ripe lemon skin, lime wedges and a touch of flint.
Good fruit-forward example.
White
2001 Hugel Riesling "Hugel" France, Alsace
84 points
Mid-yellow in colour, the wine shows some evolution with lanolin, honeycomb, beeswax, petrol and marzipan.
Despite the development, the entry is firm, with strident acidity (almost protruding) with some weight on the mid-palate, oily texture and rich texture. A floral (apple and lemon blossom) note runs through the wine, yet it does finish with a honey edge. Slightly compromised?
White
2004 Paul Blanck Riesling France, Alsace
flawed
A light, fresh nose with lemon zest, flowers and bright fruit, almost new world in direction.
However, the palate is a little muffled with crisp acidity, and the fruits are slowly sucked out of the wine remarkably quickly. Some cork taint but is very light.
White
2005 Château Grande Cassagne Costières-de-Nîmes Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Costières-de-Nîmes
83 points
Given wine 3 was corked, the organiser kindly opened a replacement bottle. However, it was not a Riesling but a southern French blend (Roussanne/Marsanne). Unusual in choice, the wine was on hand, and it had soft Meyer lemon with waxy yellow apple flesh, metallic notes and peaches. Medium length, simple and fun to try.

Flight 2 - Three Countries (3 notes)

White
2005 Radford Wines Riesling Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
87 points
Pale lemon in colour, the nose is filled with attractive lime blossom, wax and lemon peel.
A pronounced fruit-forward wine, the entry is focussed and bright, and linear. A racy, energetic acidity cleanses the mid-palate and is balanced by ripe citrus fruits and a long length.
White - Off-dry
2003 Mönchhof Robert Eymael Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
88 points
7.5% alcohol, the wine is pale lemon with a nose of honeysuckle, honeycomb and apple blossom. More that savoury, old-world accent, there is a restraint to the aromas.
The entry is mineral, slate and linear shape and is kept tight with a racy, rather nervy-edged acidity. The noted RS integrates well with the high acidity whilst minerals and some stone fruits help to complex the wine. Medium to long, the wine has a lovely concentration, although the finish is a little sugary.
White
2001 Klein Constantia Sauvignon Blanc South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
84 points
Pale yellow and luminous, the wine shows some age with warm, ripe peach fruits and citrus. Quite rich on entry the wine lacks some acidity and feels flat in the mid-palate. Some overripe papaya and oily notes towards the finish that quickly falls away.

Flight 3 - Three Countries (3 notes)

White
1992 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Pale lemon with intense notes of lime and lemon leaves, minerals and honeysuckle. There is also an overriding ammoniac or skunk flavour. Youthful and vibrant with a mineral-edged acidity, the wine is low to medium in alcohol and feels tightly knit and focused. A bit of muscle here with a juicy core this has a long length and showed very nicely!
White
2004 Radford Wines Riesling Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
89 points
Light to mid lemon, the wine has some intense notes with sherbert lemon, lime and brightness, suggesting New World. The entry is all ripe lime and grapefruit and is balanced by a crisp acidity with a chalky/sherbet edge that works nicely. Lovely line and bubbles along, perhaps finishing shorter than expected.
White
2004 Paul Blanck Riesling Schlossberg France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
90 points
Pale lemon-green the floral aromas are intense and lifted with notes of pyrazines (bell pepper), lemon zest, chilled apple, tarragon and lime sherbet.
The palate is a sweeter fruit, more rounded wine than expected with lots of riper fruit, more Gala apple than Granny smith, and the bell pepper is a little more asparagus with a touch of mint and tarragon. Very good quality wine from a warmer climate like Alsace and the concentration of a Grand Cru site.

Flight 4 - A sweet to finish (1 note)

White - Off-dry
1989 Bischofliches Konvikt Eitelsbacher Marienholz Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
89 points
8.5% alcohol, this Auslese is deep yellow in colour with a bouquet of honey, spice, mint and humbugs. A rich entry with noted sweetness and excellent penetration.
Well balanced, the wine has some fleshy to the mid-palate and is long.
