Introduction

The wines were all served with poached Norwegian salmon with some hollandaise sauce and tenderstem broccoli. Some blue cheese at the end for the other wines.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
1989 Lanson Champagne Gold Label Brut France, Champagne
89 points
Deep bronze in colour with distinct stale brioche, marmite and savoury tones.
Tertiary notes on entry with strong autolytic and leesy characters dry chalk, yeast extract and toasted brioche. A bright, piercing, direct acidity (pre-climate change!) threads through the wine, giving more zip to some tiring flavours. Still holdings its own but drink up!
White
2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
Pale yellow, the aromas are mineral, crushed rocks, chalk, lemon and lime zest even some raw meat.
The entry has penetration and breadth with a lovely oatmeal, chalk and mineral grip. As fresh as a daisy, the core contains a strident acidity and robust mid-palate texture containing cooked Bramley apple, Forelle pear and crushed rocks. A clipped wine it races to a long finish.

White
2005 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Turckheim France, Alsace
82 points
Mid-tawny to deep bronze, the wine is showing its age and displays oxidation and tired fruits.
Not much on the palate; there is some sweetness and a rich, dried out glace orange and honey but little else. Medium acidity.
White
2005 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Auslese trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
90 points
The golden-yellow wine is bright with honey, white flowers and apple aromas.
A fresh entry, linear in shape with a cut of vibrant acidity, there is some tertiary development that works to give complexity. Flavours of lemon zest, mineral and dried citrus fruit have a sherbet texture and a long finish. Quite a warming length. Good intensity of flavour.
