Flight 1 (14 notes)

White
2018 Bodegas La Cana Albariño Navia Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas
90 points
Served double blind. Clean and bright with just a modest hint of green. No oak influence with prominent acids on the finish. I guessed that this was some sort of Loire white, especially with its touch of salinity. Not a profound wine, but this would definitely be very nice with some oysters.
Red
2000 Château Charmail France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
90 points
Served double blind. Fairly ripe, with clear cabernet notes, though the pyrazines aren't the prominent character here. Fairly ripe, with modest black-fruited notes and some dried date aromas making me think that this was a Californian cabernet from the early 1990s. Nicely balanced, readily drinkable right now. My 4th, group's 6th.
Red
2000 Château Giscours France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
90 points
Served double blind. Fairly leathery with a modest hint of brett as well. Less expressive and fruity, and in the context of the tasting, relatively austere. Some mentioned perfume, but I didn't really pick it up. Generally good acidity and balance here -- pretty textbook cabernet. My 7th, group's 9th.

2000 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
88 points
Served double blind. Not a big fan of the aldehydic qualities of the nose here. Feels a little imbalanced in that the ripe fruit has been browning and drying out rather than developing with the rest of the palate which in context felt a little hollow and showed less fruit and more earthiness. My 8th, group's 11th.
Red
2000 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Served double blind. Dark fruit that has the intensity to make me think that this was an older Californian wine. Full on the palate, but with balanced acidity and nicely resolved tannins. A faint hint of oak on the back end here. A very complete and properly made cabernet sauvignon. My 2nd, group's 10th.

2000 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
88 points
Served double blind. Quite plummy (almost to a fault) on the nose; on the palate this feels a bit like an older wine made in a Parkerized style that just hasn't aged very well. Some slightly bitter oak on the finish and a bit of a modernized take here. Not the heft on the palate I would expect given the ripeness of the fruit. My 9th, group's 7th.

2000 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
Served double blind. A bit of meatiness on the nose here, with distinct leathery notes. Sweet, with a relatively younger fruit profile here and with some of the oak showing prominently on the nose too. Quite barnyardy, with high acid. I'm slightly salty that I didn't pick this out as Gruaud Larose. My 5th, group's 5th.

2000 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Served double blind. Darker fruit here, with again a bit of a plummy note, but not dried out, despite also having some ripe, slightly raisinated notes on the nose. Sweeter profile and showing quite young, and clearly from a ripe year. All of this put together still works in an integrated package. My 1st, group's 2nd.

2000 Château Smith Haut Lafitte France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
Served double blind. Slightly bretty nose with a touch of oak as well. Very sweet and quite ripe, with large-scaled structure on the palate. A leathery profile, with nice acids on the finish. Not as pronounced as far as the fruit goes, but there's enough to keep all of the previous notes in check. My 3rd, group's 1st.

2000 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
83 points
Served double blind. Sticks out like a sore thumb. Sharpie-marker and high-toned aldehydes on the nose. Sweet and sickly, with some cough syrup fruit and bitter notes on the palate. Alcoholic and oaky to fault, with a lot of black cherry/vanilla notes. Not to my liking at all. My 11th, group's 4th.

2000 Château Troplong Mondot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
85 points
Served double blind. Cherry liqueur on the nose here. Very sweet and cough-syrup-like, and not all that different from the preceding wine (which turned out to be the 2000 Araujo Eisele). High tannin, high oak, high bitterness -- the sort of internal wine that Robert Parker would love. Pruney and desiccated, with alcohol notes on the finish. My 10th, group's 8th.

2000 Château La Croix St. Georges France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
90 points
Served double blind. Meaty and sweaty, the way some Rioja can be. High alcohol on the palate, but without the high oak of some of the other riper, blowsier wines in the lineup. Only a moderate tannic finish, with generally good balance. Leathery profile. My 6th, group's 3rd.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Doisy-Daëne France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
90 points
Served double blind. Unequivocally Sauternes, but I thought this was a decade older based on the colour and the maturity this showed on the palate. Not too sweet, and I really like the bitter marmalade notes on the palate here, giving this quite a bit of balance. I admit to be slightly shocked at how advanced this was showing given the vintage.
