Introduction
Last thursday 7 members of Uncorked DK got together for a bring your own at Restaurant Nouveau. The setting and food were excellent, the company great fun og the wines fantastic as many participants showed themselves from their most generous side.
Enough said, on with the wines...
Flight 1 - Flight 1 (1 note)
Flight 2 - Flight 2 (1 note)
White
2006 Morlet Family Vineyards La Proportion Dorée
USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Light, slightly green, yellow. Loads of butter, licorice, flowers, dried flowers, anise, toasted oak and honey. Great fat and intense mouthfeel with more licorice. Low on acid and perhaps showing a bit too much alcohol. Also got minerals and herbal notes. The flowers and licorice made me guess for a top Austrian Riesling, but wasn't consistent with the low level of acid. My second wine from Morlet in a couple of weeks and once again I am impressed.
Flight 3 - Flight 3 (2 notes)
On paper an odd couple, but they went nicely together.
Red
1989 Château Clinet
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Dark red. Seducing and sweet nose with blackcurrant, mocca, cedre and some tobacco. Nice sour mature fruit with some green spicyness, good intensity and length. Very fine tannins that contributes to a silky mouthfeel. Very classic and hedonistic, but lacks some concentration to be extraordinay.
Flight 4 - Flight 4 (2 notes)
Two amazing wines. One completely unapproachable and one just singing.
Red
2005 Château Pavie Macquin
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Very dark inkish red. Extremely sweet, sour and dense nose of primary red fruit, nail polish remover and smoke. Huge mouthfeel with shy cherries and loads of almost lemony acid. The potential is probably great, but it is difficult to appreciate today. One glass was put away for 4 more hours, but came back virtually unchanged.
Red
2001 Bodegas Roda Rioja Cirsion
Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Very dark red. Sweet and spicy nose with cristmas spices and loads of amazingly delicious toasted oak. Huge, soft and fat fruitdriven mouthfeel. A hedonistic bomb! Yet it maintains poise and balance and never becomes heavy. One of the very best Spanish wines!
Flight 5 - Flight 5 (2 notes)
Syrah, syrah, syrah...
Red
1999 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Dark red. Nose of buttermilk, sweet dark fruit, herbs, christmas spices, white pepper and smoked bacon. In the mouth it has mouthwatering acidity and good intensity combined with an elegant feel. The smoked and meaty flavors danses elegantly over the tongue. Guigal rules!
Red
2005 Kongsgaard Syrah Hudson Vineyard
USA, California, Napa Valley
Very dark red. Extremely intense and sweet nose of blackcurrant, underneath that layers of flowers, herbs and dried craneberries, smoke licorice and cough juice. In the mouth it virtually explodes and becomes weightless, the flavors going everywhere. The sweetness of the fruit outs this as Californian, but in complexity and mouthfeel close to a perfect Cote Rotie.
Flight 6 - Flight 6 (1 note)
Red
2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Red, slightly transparent, watery rim. Nose is a bit shy, but displays orange peel, raspberries, lemon and marzipan. In the mouth it has soft tannins that seems nicely integrated, but the fruit seems absent and it displays a bit too much lemony acidity. Most probably somewhat closed.
Flight 7 - Flight 7 (2 notes)
I brought these and they performed about as expected. I had hoped for a little more from the 96.
Red
1997 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Light red, slightly brown. Light sour cherry nose, strawberries, sweet vanilla, brown sugar, some vegetables. Nice round sweetness in mouth with a healthy acidity and some meaty flavors. Good intensity and length. Almost chambolle like finesse.
Red
1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Medium red. Sweet nose of dark sour cherries, loads of farm vegetables, some lemon peel. Impressive intensity with very pure fruit flavors. Has a lot of bite from the acid, but seems to pull together with air. Pretty complex with sweet oak, hung meat, cough juice and white pepper. Could use just a bit more fruit to be more balanced.
Flight 8 - Flight 8 (2 notes)
Oh, well, we got to taste a true legend!
Red
2000 Château La Mission Haut-Brion
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Deep dark red. Sweet and intense blackcurrant and herbal nose. Big round and seducing body with sweet blackcurrants, sweet oak and loads of herbs and Cuban tobacco. Integrated with that special "seamless" mouthfeel where the wine presents itself holistically from entry to finish - and what a finish. Extremely complex and with loads of finesse. In hindsight I should probably have given a three digit score, but I was a bit tired and did not have the necessary resources to appriciate the last details of this amazing wine. Reminds me of the 89 Haut Brion.
Red
2000 Tertre Rôteboeuf
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Deep dark red. Very sweet and intense nose of blackcurrant, blueberries, blackberries, buttermilk, sweet pibe tobacco and licorice. Huge mouthfeel with plenty of fruit and many layers pointing in different directions. Has to come a bit more together, but what potential.
Flight 9 - Flight 9 (2 notes)
These were amazing, but both close to being "over the top".
Red
2000 La Mondotte
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Deep dark red. Intense and sweet nose of black fruit, cedre, gravel and sweet oak. Extremely intense and young, but already seamless, almost monolithic. Enters the mouth like a smooth interstellar U.F.O. Maintains balance. If anything negative can be said this is too polished for my taste.
Red
2003 BOND Pluribus
USA, California, Napa Valley
Dark, almost black, red. Extremely sweet and intense nose of blackcurrant and hints of a salty ocean. Like starring into a black hole. Mindwhacking concentration. A bit drying on the otherwise long finish. This is clearly exceptional and with great potential for development, but I find it a bit too concentrated, the black fruit almost eliminating the feel of terroir.
Flight 10 - Flight 10 (1 note)
A newly released version of an old favorite.
Closing
I always find these BYOs to be great fun and very educational and this was one of the best examples. Thank you all!
