Introduction

Ben Andersen of Rosenthal Wine Merchants recently returned from a month in France and Italy and hosted this lunch and tasting that featured some of the best of their Italian wines.

Flight 1 - High End Italian Wines & Lunch (7 notes)

A series of the higher end Italian selections were served for a limited number of guests. T

White
2004 Ferrando Erbaluce di Caluso Cuvée del Fondatore Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Erbaluce di Caluso
Lychee, grain and floral on the nose. The palate was consistent with lychee and an intriguing olive oil note. Quite pleasant.
Red
2004 Podere le Boncie (Giovanna Morganti) Chianti Classico Le Trame Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Floral, ash and blk cherry nose. The acidity was a bit too high for my liking.
Red
2004 Fratelli Brovia Dolcetto d'Alba Solatio Brovia Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba
Ham, clove and anise on the nose. Red fruit and tomato juice on the palate. OK...but not my bag.
Red
2001 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Villero Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Licorice, whole black peppercorns, prune and roasted meat on the very nice nose. The palate was ripe and burgundian in it's elegance. An iron note was obvious in this delicious wine. Great stuff.
Red
2002 Paolo Bea Rosso de Véo Italy, Umbria, Vino da Tavola
No formal note other than to say this guy knocked it out of the park in a very difficult vintage. Wow!
Red
2003 Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Rosso
Roasted meat, mushroom and spice on the nose. On the palate it's Rhone wine and an excellent one at that. A cross between Chateau Rayas and Henri Bonneau...no kidding.
Red - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Paolo Bea Montefalco Sagrantino Passito Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino
Mind blowing stuff. The nose of this port like concoction has the requisite raising notes but with an impressive freshness and earth. On the palate the initial impression is sweet then it finishes dry. A schizopohrenic wine in the best possible way. Incredible!
