Pol Roger - Probably the worst wine [experience] in the world

The Pawn, Hong Kong

Tasted June 3, 2008 by Wrighty with 679 views

Introduction

I quote from the advert "a unique opportunity to share an evening with Patrice Noyelle, President of Pol Roger. Interact with Patrice and hear his comments'. $180 a head including 5 wines - 4 vintage.

While the wines were good, but not so good that the arrogance didn't matter, and the food and service great the fact that the visitors from Pol Roger completely ignored us, was exceptional, even for HK standards.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Pol Roger Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
88 points
Fine mousse, medium body. Apple and hints of honey. A little flat towards the end.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1995 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
90 points
Light golden colour; Bready nose; Fine mousse and fresh crispness. Toastiness came through on the nose later.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1990 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Chardonnay France, Champagne
92 points
Incredibly bright colour for age - light golden colour. Autumnal apples, some yeast. Nose fades though. Palate still every lively, good mouth feel.

Flight 4 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1996 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill France, Champagne
93 points
Light colour. Floral perfume nose, hint of honey and brioche. Full (but slightly large) mousse. Structured and went well with the food. Long finish with roast lemon notes.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Rosé - Sparkling
1998 Pol Roger Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
86 points
Little nose, little palate. Lean and structured but disappointing. Hints of fruit later but....

Closing

While we arrived early and were kept topped up with NV when the main party turned up they stayed at the bar for 45 mins before sitting down for dinner and then proceeded to ignore us for the entire meal. There were only 4 other guests, but at no point did anyone even say hello or come to ask how the evening was going or what we thought of the wines.

We left feeling that we had only been invited to cover some of the cost - it was like having to pay to gatecrash a wedding.

I have the 1990 Pol Roger sat in my cellar waiting for my 40th but that will be my last bottle. While the wines were good they weren't so good that they didn't need a 'story' and a couple of glasses with the President is a 'story'. Alas never to be told and never to be bought.
