Friday Night Brown Bagger
R&D’s
Tasted May 12, 2023 by AllRed with 14 views
Introduction
Our small group of eight gathered for our regular third Friday brown bag tasting. Wines are brought in paper bags and arranged randomly but we attempt to go somewhat light to heavy by placing wines towards one end of the table or the other, and then we mix them a bit from there. Each flight is tasted and unveiled prior to moving on to the next flight.
Flight 1 - Warm ups (3 notes)
Rosé
2021 Captûre Wines Rosé of Sangiovese
87 points
Double blind. Quite pale in color with notes of cherry, white currant and florals. Muted fruit elements on t(e palate with a tinny metallic quality and mineral tone in the finish. I find the metallic note a little distracting.
Rosé
2021 Cenyth Cabernet Franc Rosé
88 points
Double blind. Also light in color, even by rosé standards. Melon, berry and red fruit notes with a hint of spice underneath. Flavors of red apple, macerated berries and spice. Has a “richness” to it. Guessed domestic rosé of sauvignon.
Rosé
2021 Lewis Cellars Syrah Vin Gris
89 points
Double blind, though as soon as this rosé is poured it is instantly recognizable. Telltale deep color with notes of spice and red berry fruit. Berry and white pepper on the palate. Seems a bit soft/muted.
Flight 2 - Reds (4 notes)
Red
2004 Amphora Winery Petite Sirah Mounts Vineyard
Double blind. Fairly dark color. Notes of bouillon, worcestshire, plum and raisin. Ripe dark fruit on the palate has a sourness that is rather off-putting. Perhaps some heat exposure? Likely not a pristine/representative example. (J&J)
Red
2015 Favia Syrah Quarzo
92 points
Double blind. Darkest color of the flight. Aromas of blackberry, mocha and vanilla. Picks up a pepper note with air. Good depth and complexity on the palate with flavors of blackberry, vanilla, licorice and raspberry. Medium tannins have a slightly chalky texture. Guessed petite. (R&D)
Red
2004 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau
93 points
Blind. Light color. Red fruit, earth, herbs, cherry, garrigue and perfume notes; lovely. Medium-bodied, with flavors of red fruit, spice and pepper. Balanced. Double decanted off its sediment over an hour earlier.
Red
2012 Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot
92 points
Double blind. Notes of incense, perfume and brown sugar over black plummy fruit. Abundant fruit on the palate, with a brown sugar quality appearing in the finish as well. Drinking well. (R&R)

Flight 3 - Reds (4 notes)
Red
2017 Lorenzo Sassetti Brunello di Montalcino
Double blind. Light color. Cherry, raspberry and perfumed floral notes. Herb and earthy tones emerge with air. Terrific red fruit on the palate. Medium-bodied. This seemed more Bordeaux than Brunello, but was quite good nonetheless. (R&R)
Red
2015 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
Double blind. Lighter color with aromas of red plum and florals with herbal overtones. On the light side of medium-bodied, with flavors of red berry fruit and dried herbs. (J&J)
Red
2015 Pauillac de Latour
92 points
Double blind. Darkest wine in the flight. Aromas of candied black fruit, plum and green tobacco. Full-bodied. Abundant dark fruit on the palate with earthy undertones. Guessed Bordeaux. (R&D)
Red
2007 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau
90 points
Blind. Lighter color with notes of red fruit, spice and earth with hints of earth/barnyard underneath. Cherry and red berry fruit flavors with plenty of garrigue as well. Very nice. Easy to pick out as our CndP.
This had been double decanted off its sediment about three hours earlier and this is drinking nicely with that bit of air.

Flight 4 - Bonus/dessert wine (1 note)
Red
2015 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndenhurst
91 points
Double blind. Inky opaque color with notes of cassis, blackberry and mocha. Just slightly grapey in a youthful way. Licorice, black fruit and violet liqueur flavors. Fine, sweet tannins. Guessed '18 Napa cab sauv. (R&D)
