Tasted June 18, 2008 by DoubleMagnum with 450 views

Introduction

Informal gathering with a group of my closest friends.

Flight 1 - Pacific Nothwest (4 notes)

This was flight #18 on the tasting menu

Red
2006 Yamhill Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
89 points
Lovely nose of cherry and strawberry. This wine should be extremely versatile with food as it has enough acidity to balance out a meal fairly well. Very supple on the palate and an decent finish. Not overly complex but great varietal character, good structure and well made overall.
Red
2005 Woodward Canyon Merlot USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
90 points
Not sure about the cost of this bottle as I only had a taste but its nose is quite complex with notes of coffee, vanilla and cocoa. On the palate it is potent, well structured, filling. The finish, at least 20 seconds. Great product.
Red
2006 Cristom Pinot Noir Mt. Jefferson Cuvée USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
89 points
Notes of berries, cola, spice and tea. Spicy, sharp and angular on the palate. Needs some time. Good potential.
Red
2005 DeLille Cellars Doyenne Aix USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain
90 points
This is a heavy lifter. The more serious wine of the night. A nose of black currants, caramel, toasted oak and coffee. On the palate it is mouth-filling, concentrated and it's got a good amount of extract. It may have benefitted from a decanter but I would let it rest at least another year in the cellar if I had another bottle. Powerful but not overdone. Very good offering.

Flight 2 - French Reds Flight (2 notes)

This was flight #13 on the tasting menu

Red
2004 Château Quinault L'Enclos France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
89 points
Agree with many of the reviews here. This is still too young for consumption. Lay it down for another couple of years. It has great potential.
Red
2005 Patrick Lesec Gigondas Cuvée Romaine Les Espalines France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
87 points
Expected a little more. Not bad but not memorable either.
