Sensory Evaluation excursion: Badia a Coltibuono

Gaiole in Chianti

Tasted June 21, 2008 by Barbara B with 378 views

Introduction

Group of 11; took three hours from Rome by bus, during which time we watched Mondovino (again). We toured the beautiful grounds and abbey, then had the tasting of three wines with local cheeses and meats. After that, a quick look at the church and lunch in the restaurant.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2006 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
89 points
90% SG, 10% Cannaiolo. Very good CC. Ruby, clear, moderate acidity, moderate level of smooth tannins, light body. Not too intense or persistent, medium length and complexity. Just like a CC should be.
Red
2004 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
91 points
90% SG, 10% Canaiolo. Very, very good CCR with typicity. Nice nose with good intensity of aromas. Some oakiness (some barrique, mostly botte grande), bright acidity, medium level of good grippy tannins, high alcohol (label =15%) but doesn't throw the wine off balance. I like it, and would have bought two bottles except they're sold out (therefore bought the 2005, untasted).
Red
2003 Badia a Coltibuono Sangioveto di Toscana Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
90 points
100% Sangiovese. Much denser and darker than the CC and CCR. Fairly intense aromas and flavours, medium acidity, smooth tannins, rich, long, complex.

Closing

After Badia a Coltibuono, we went to Podere Boggioli in Montegonzi for a tutored olive oil tasting led by Keith Richmond. Good discussion of varietal, vintage and terroir differences among the oils. Three hours to get back to Rome (watched Whale Rider). Another great day...
