Introduction

Blind tasting 1997-2002 Cab or Bordeaux, blind. Had the Winslow's and Davis's over.

Flight 1 - starters to the night (2 notes)

Rosé
2007 Bodegas Muga Rioja Rosado Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
light crisp wine with crushed rose petals, perfumed fruits and a good balance. Nice inexpensive wine to drink.
Red
2005 Sanford Pinot Noir Barrel Select Sanford & Benedict Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
90 points
great smoke, red ripe strawberries, and some nice earthy tones. Bold pinot but very well balanced. These single vineyard from Sanford are really drinking well.

Flight 2 - Six Blind wines from 1997-2002 presented and drank blind (6 notes)

Red
2001 Vidovich Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello Road USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
92 points
This was the first wine in our blind lineup.. Sweet red fruit, outstanding balance with smooth silky tannins. Finish was a bit short. Never even heard of these guys and they are producing some great stuff. Even though they are on Monte Bello road, vastly different style than Ridge Monte Bello. This is more sweet fruit, balance and silk than the traditional Ridge Monte Bello. 3rd place for the night
Red
1998 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
flawed
This bottle was so corked I could have filled up 1/4 ounce pours and sold to the wine tasting companies as the perfect corked bottle for those wine smelling kits. Really nothing that any of us had experienced before. Massive corkage here! Finished last.
Red
2000 Château Monbousquet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
massive espresso, chocolate and lush dark fruits. Had some smoky tones and great earth feel. Really well made and still big and bold. Tied for 1st
Red
2001 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington
92 points
picked this one out immediately. Massive ripe, rich, overly sweet fruit. Too overly sweet was the problem. Almost borderline cotton candy. Has a silk like texture and the oak was perfectly integrated. Really a seamless wine that would have scored big points if the fruit was toned down a bit, just overly sweet unfortunately. Finished 4th, but had a number one vote
Red
2002 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
good overall wine here. Still young, but very one dimensional. Had some nice dark fruits, cedar and chocolate. A little lean with a slight green streak to it. Finished 5th
Red
2001 Flora Springs Cabernet Sauvignon Holy Smoke Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
cedar, earth, super silky, crushed violet, with great red fruits. Tannin and oak structure were pure as can be. great wine. Ultra sleek and pure. I had never even seen this bottle before. Finished tied for 1st, my favorite

Flight 3 - dessert (1 note)

Red - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Vineyard 29 Zinfandel Late Harvest Aida Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
93 points
really good stuff here. not ultra sweet, but more a very well balanced wine with nice dark fruits, incredible balance and some brown sugar. Has a bit of cola to it as well.
