2001 Brunello tasting

NYC

Tasted September 6, 2008 - September 8, 2008 by amateurwino with 371 views

Introduction

We tasted 4 brunellos, three 2001s with one ringer from 2003, single-blind.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Donatella Cinelli Colombini Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
88 points
barnyard and earth on nose and palate. Very tannic and a bit astringent . With time a sweet note develops.
Red
2003 La Lecciaia Di Pacini Mauro Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
smooth and balanced, nice acidity, great old world flavor with modern power. 92. Juicy red fruit.

Tasted this blind, impressed with the performance considering that this was the 2003 ringer among 2001s.

Update: this wine also seems to be available for as low as $30, so great QPR. Also, I had this originally tagged this as the Collina bottling, but I believe it was actually this bottling.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Tenuta Fanti Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
97 points
Mesmerizing nose of fruit and slightly sweet tobacco/ smoke, powerful juicy palate. Perfect balance of wonderful ripe fruit, nicely integrated oak , slight but attractive herbal greenness, notquite eucalyptus. Smells and tastes like money. Glorious.
Red
2001 Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
88 points
Smoother than the Donatella but flatter and less interesting. Less disjointed though. And better made, in the sense of being a smooth complement to food?

Closing

Surprisingly, the 2003 Lecciaia won the most votes as favorite, slightly edging the highly-rated Fanti. All very good wines though.
