Introduction
Kedington's annual Australian night. Some new wineries this year and some the same, Wantirna even poured the same wines which is a shame.
Flight 1 - Wantirna (3 notes)
What a shame they turned up the same wines as last year! Don't think they showed as well either.
Red
2005 Wantirna Estate Pinot Noir Lily
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Lovely nose - strawberry vanilla, palate is a bit think up front but structured at the end and good finish.
Flight 2 - Yeringberg (3 notes)
An interesting small producer from the Yarra Valley. Lovely wines but just a little over priced.
Red
2005 Yeringberg
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Blackcurrant nose, some cedar on nose. Palate is drying with a little greenness but still balanced. Anise on finish
Flight 3 - Parker (2 notes)
Good to try, the estate cab and was all nose and little palate, the First Growth mellowed nose and more on the plate
Flight 4 - Glaetzer (4 notes)
The Amon-Ra has sold out, shame. These didn't impress as much as last year's. Over hyped?
Red
2006 Glaetzer Shiraz Bishop
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
'Clean' nose (think wind tunnel clean). Some smoke. Blackcurrant palate and good concentrated finish.
Red
2006 Glaetzer Anaperenna
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Some liquorice and tar nose, tight berries. Palate is quite 'crisp', blackcurrant, good balance and finish.
Flight 5 - Woodstock (5 notes)
This was good last year but better this. The regular Cab is fantastic value and the Woodstock was again very good.
Red - Fortified
N.V. Woodstock Very Old Fortified
Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
Vegetal, fetid, green mulch. Then dark ricj bitter chocolate. Then raisiny fruit cake. Palate is more 'portesque'. Smooth with a tannic back bone. Good warm finish.
Flight 6 - Plantagenet (7 notes)
Slightly disapointing. there seemed to be potential but these wines didn't quite fulfill it.
White
2005 Plantagenet Riesling
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Great Southern
Unripe but hints of promise. Worth trying other vintages.
Red
2004 Plantagenet Shiraz
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Mount Barker
Slight raisin, palate is more balanced but slightly porty finish
Closing
All in all good value and a chance to choose some wines for the coming year. This years star was probably Woodstock.
