Introduction

Beautiful Friday evening, started out by the pool. Mollie made terrific starters; killer Ahi and avocado with some red onion, and goat cheese and mushroom puree on baquet slices, artichoke, lemon and mayonaise on toast

Started out with a 1979 champaigne

Flight 1 - 1979 Champagne (1 note)

Very refreshing, surprised at the vintage and thoroughly enjoyed this one

Great shape considering the age. Lovely mousse, malo-lactic flavors up front, good balance, but finish faded out a bit

Flight 2 - Fabulous and unusual Blanc de Vougeot (1 note)

At this point, Matt and Vicki joined us and the steaks were put on the grill, and this terrific burgundian chardonnay grabbed all of our attention, lovely wine!

Fabulous wine..great fuit up front with malo-lactic finish and vanilla, oak held in proper perspective. Beautiful mouthfeel and complexity, long finish and as it opened, terrific minerality became apparent in the mouthfeel, fruit very solid and long lasting

Flight 3 - Horizontal 2000; Flowers Sonoma Coast side by side with the Dujac Clos St. Denis (2 notes)

By now we were seated and the wines poured into quality stems; both had been opened for about an hour. I am very partial to the Flowers and nudged it slightly ahead tonight, but the Dujac has better long term prospects. Steaks were gorgeous and accompanied by asparagus and Mollie's special scalloped potatoes served in individual ramikens

Even better. Fabulous fruit with finesse, great balance and finish. This is an elegant wine. Held together very well, good for another 5 years. Have a fair amount of sediment at end, may try decanting just before serving next time

great fruit, with a bit of funk of front (sulphur) that quickly resolved in the glass. Full round presence, a real mouthful with lingering finish. In the glass, over an hour or so, this wine really came on quite nicely; slightly herbal stemminess came up but not a problem. Color is not deep, but the complexity of this wine is developing nicely; certainly a keeper. Expect score to improve with more bottle time

Flight 4 - Bring out the big boy (1 note)

The Pommard is a moumental wine, tremendous depth and presence, long way to go before it peaks

Very impressive Pommard..big and chewy. Unfiltered and the tannins are noteable...may last forever! Black cherries predominant, and the finish is very long

Flight 5 - What's for dessert? (1 note)

Another Burgundian treat; 2001 slipped in at the end. We finished up with wonderful chocolate mousse and rasberries. The Gevrey Chambertin was a very interesting paring, the raspberries brought out its fruit complexity.

closed up and did not have a chance to develop before we tasted it. Very nice fruits, shows great promise but needs several more years before its full potential will be known. Score likely to improve
