Mimosa Restaurant

Introduction

We were at Mimosa for dinner with another wine-loving couple. Mimosa is a terrific French bistro in Los Angeles with a down--to-earth, un-fussy, traditional French bistro comfort food menu. And as always, it did not disappoint... always a great meal at Mimosa.

Flight 1 - 1999: White Burgundy and Red Bordeaux (2 notes)

White
1999 Domaine Jean-Marc Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

The wine was a beautiful faint gold-green color. The nose offered that magical combination of green apples, brioche, white flowers and a bit of white mineral, if that makes any sense. On the palate the wine was medium bodied with good intensity and impeccably balanced. It tasted of apple, mineral and something darker and nutty. Finish was terrific. It has entered its drinking period and will improve over a few years and hold for a few more. This was absolutely outstanding
Red
1999 Château Monbousquet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Decanted about 45 minutes. Dark red and young-looking. Soaring nose of dark red and blue berries, kirsch, mocha, and some earth. Moderately dense in the mouth, with fine, sweet tannins, excellent balance of restrained acid and structure, dark fruit and earth elements. I agree with other TNs that this has a 'new world' quality, both in its denseness and the sweetness of fruit with relatively less tobacco / cedar / leather. But make no mistake, it was completely satisfying with dinner and gets the big thumbs-up. One of the most enjoyable '99 bordeauxs we've had.

Closing

Utterly satisfying, a wonderful evening with friends. BTW, the restaurant was quite empty. The effect of the economy was very obvious. The manager told us that it had been getting worse over several months. We don't go out to restaurants every weekend and so hadn't been tracking the falloff in local business, but it seems as if those folks who go out frequently are cutting back. The manager also told us of some recent restaurant closings he'd heard about. Yikes.
