Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2003 Château Greysac France, Bordeaux, Médoc

Decanted for three hours. Color: Dull purple or plum. Opaque - or even muddy. Nose: Faint earthy/barnyard scent. Surprisingly weak though, even after the three hours. Taste: Again, surprisingly subtle but maybe I am just too used to the Cali cabs and Merlots that I have been drinking lately. Tannins were light and softened up even further after a couple of hours. There was nothing offensive about this wine, but nothing special. Overall: I have had better Bordeaux from this vintage, but not in this price range. I hope my other bottle is better. Currently, I don't plan to buy any more. (3/5+11/15+15/20+7/10)
Red
2003 E. Guigal Gigondas France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
91 points
Not decanted. Uncorked and left to sit for two hours. Color: Red-violet. Clean, crisp color. Nose: Nice - cherries, blackberry, faint floral scents and a hint of leather. Taste: Very well balanced, not overly fruity but a nice cherry taste. Black tea was present but subtle. Moderate tannins and acidity. Slightly spicy finish. Overall: Excellent wine alone or with a meal. I can't think of anything I wouldn't pair with this wine. (4/5+12/15+17/20+8/10)
Red
2003 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Costasera Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
89 points
Color: Deep, dark purple - almost foreboding. Nose: Dense. Raisins or prunes. Some chocolate. Taste: Moderate tannins, but I kept expecting it to be sweeter for all the tastes it held - raisins, cherry, chocolate. Very desserty. Overall: My first Amarone, so be forewarned. Difficult wine to drink by itself. Went very well with food (steak) and was much more approachable after some time in the glass. (4/5+12/15+16/20+7/10)

Closing

I couldn't bring myself to open the Beaucastel. Maybe next weekend. I didn't want it to get lost in the shuffle. I will post notes when I break down and open it.
