My second bottle of this wine and it showed quite differently than earlier this year. Dark red, nose of chocolate, coffee and blackberry notes of decidedly modern construction. Lush, low acid on the palate with more blackberry and dark fruit notes. Tonight, it seemed over the top with a medium finish and some green bell peppers notes on the long fleshy finish.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1985 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

Nose of wild honey and green apple. Perfect pairing with Tarte Tatin. Similar profile on the palate as on the nose. Not very acidic but not cloying either, just right. At its peak. Drink now. Nothing extraordinary but a good complement to the meal.

1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A cornuocpia of scents on this one. Barnyard, coffee and green bell pepper notes with lead pencil, cigarbox, tobacco leaf and raspberry coulee. The palate was more Cab I believe than any other composition with bell peppers and cassis tastes. Still needs time but opened up beautifully in the glass. Impressive.

1995 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Wine Guy Weekend 2: Old saddle leather, bananas(yes, I smelled them), kirsch, smoke and some spicy cherries. More cherries and some clove and spices on the palate. Really enticing and unique. Second bottle of this wine and it was great to taste a decently aged CDP like Pegau. Long long finish. Tannins fully integrated but I could use a 1-2 hour decant. Can improve over the next 3-4 years.

Wine Guy Weekend 2 chez Dokta's. Best Californian wine I've ever had. Nose of brooding spice, plums, blackberries and pencil shavings. Very bordeaux like but with punch. Kinda hot but the smokey plum scents and the seemless, velvety texture of the wine was to die for. Nice long long and tannic black olive finish. Needs more time.

Wine Guy Weekend Chez DoktaPs: Man, do St-Estephe's last. Built like a rock. Or is it strong enough for a man but made for a woman. In any case, I digress. This had life to it and the very first 61 I've ever had.Lots of tobacco on the nose with some kirch and pencil shaving notes. Palate was typical of other older wine, that infamous orange pekoe tea with some lemon notes. The nose seemed more interesting and complex than the palate. This is definitely past its prime. Courtesy of F. G. a fine Toronto gentleman, as they say at Ritchies Auctioneers.

Wine Guy Weekend 2 chez Dokta's. Nose of bell peppers and cassis. Palate is pure elegance, suave and velvety. Shows such class and pedigree. Long and complicated. Nothing stand out in the wine but it all comes together so well that it shines. Great bottle. Long long cassis finish. Will age effortlessly for another 5-10 years. Wine of the weekend.

1981 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Wine Guy Weekend chez DoktaPs: I am surprised at the Cellartracker notes for this wine putting it in the high 80s with people finding this drinkable. Quite possibly, the bottle I had was corked or off so I am sure there may be more pristine ones out there. Anyway, someone put it perfectly when they said this wine tasted like "a poor man's horse's arse". I leave it like that.

1997 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
flawed
This was acidic with green bell pepper notes on the nose and palate. You could see the structure underneath but no idea what happened. I guess another off bottle. Thin finish. Nothing like the 1989 that was fantastic(mimik 96 points if I remember correctly) and consumed earlier this year.
Red
1961 Château Rauzan-Gassies France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
87 points
Wine Guy Weekend chez DoktaPs: A little better of a showing than the Lafon-Rochet, a darker colour with a huge cassis nose with scents of pomegranite and tobacco. Palate is light with orange pekoe tea and tobacco leaf and some pomegranite. Light, with a few left over tannins on a short short finish. Drink now.(Past its prime)
Red
1997 Angelo Rocca & Figli Rosso Salento IGT Italy, Puglia, Salento IGT

Wine Guy Weekend chez DoktaPs: I liked this wine. Nose of cherried and red plums, really structured wine with a velvety texture, low acidity and hitns of tobacco on the palate and nose. Lovely and elegant.

1971 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
flawed
Wine Guy weekend. chez DoktaPs: Dead Not rated. Horse dung nose. may have been flawed or just way too old.

Light orange/pale ruby-brick colour. A nose of sulphur. hibiscus, and iced tea with hints of tar. More lemony iced tea taste on the palate and strikingly similar in taste profile to the 1934 Margaux I had only earlier this year but the later was slightly more dense. Maybe a 5-10 second finish and despite the bottle's age, it had a decent amount of acidity and a light but present nose. 111 year old bottle. Wow factor, 95 points, overall 87-88 points. Thanks to the generous DoktaP for blessing us with this sample of tasting through history. Incredible.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Pure apricot nectar, honey, pineapple and bananas on the initial nose. The palate is filled with oily apricot liqueur but without ever being cloying. Long long everlasting fruit flavours as each sip is permeated with a biting but well integrated acidity that makes your mouth salivate for more and more minutes after having swallowed the nectar. What can I say? Perfection in a bottle. Second time tasting this gem with another perfect score. Can't get better than this.

Wine Guy Weekend Chez DoktaP's: Nose of canned pear, honey and flowers with lychee notes. Palate is smooth, rather fruity with pear liqueur notes and butter. Smooth and sexy wine. Medium finish.

1989 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Riserva Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Earthy, cherry compote, fresh flowers, vanilla pomegranite, meat and dark chocolate with hints of tobacco came across the nose which needed coaxing to show all its stuffing. Palate is firm with good structure and tastes of morello cherries. Medium acidic bite gives it some edge. Still youthful but into into its drinking window. Elegant by powerful at the same time.

Wine Guy Weekend 2 Chez DoktaP's: New world meets old. Cassis and bell pepper notes(the good kind. Lots of heat on the palate with vanilla notes. Smells like a bordeaux. Long vanilla finish and maybe a bit monolithic but shows its well made. Revisit in 3-4 years.

1990 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Nose is muted. This may be an off bottle as per futronic but I've never had a fulligni before Simple dull notes of cherries and vanilla. If I were to rate it, I would rate it 84 points.

1997 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Wine Guy Weekend 2 Chez DoktaP's: A denser wine than the 1990 with a deep nose of caramel, leather, ripe cherries and vanila and some plum. More cherries and vanilla on the palate but seems simplistic. Maybe this needs time, dare I say a decant? Medium-short finish.
Red
2004 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Wine Guy Weekend 2 Chez DoktaP's: Lovely mature nose with cedar, cherries vanilla and strawberry rhubarb. A medium bodied wine which shows excellent purity and a fruit and tar driven medium finish. Not a grand wine but a stunning value and excellent to drink right away.

1991 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
92 points
Anticipated this wine. Nose of cherries and kirsch liqueur with the same profile on the palate. There is structure here and a lot of density. Packed with material but rather closed despite the brooding power underneath the layers and good finesse. Got better with food. Did not seem to want to wake up. Dense with medium tannic finish. I would guess it was either an off bottle for this wine or closed at the moment.

1991 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Wine Guy Weekend chez DoktaP's: Black cherry, licorice and anise notes permeate the nose with spicy black cherry and a dense but more revealing palate than the La Turque. Lots of stuffing and it shows this is a well built wine for the long haul. Again, it was better on day 2 but also seemed rather closed or in a dumb phase. Still a great drink. Long finish.

1982 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Wine Guy Weekend chez DoktaP's:Nose of pencil shavings, cedar, that tell-tale cassis bdx nose and hints of vanilla. Slightly understated when opened, it shone once in the mouth with a finesse and elegance that danced in my mouth. Lots of structure and elegance to this wine and not aggressive at all. Lots of acidity as well and it became more acidic as it got more air. Long cassis finish. Good stuff

2002 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Spottswoode Estate Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley

Wine Guy Weekend Chez DoktaP's: Black inky colour with licorice, vanilla, spicy plums and blackberry on the nose. Almost smelled like a Argentinian malbec to me. Palate is lush, with low acidity and more fruity black fruit notes that lingers in the mouth on a long long fine tannin finish. Tasty.
White
2006 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Gorgeous nose of candied tropical fruits, butter, butterscotch and some bananas. Palate is lush, the fruit omnipresent with judicial amounts of oaky toastiness to balance it all. Some pear in it too. Seemed like it need some more time in the glass before it showed all its charms and a couple of years more in the cellar may just do the trick or some decant time. Long long sweet buttery finish. Fantastic. One of the best whites I've ever had.
