Introduction

I was an early arrival and unfortunately none of the wines had been opened yet. Furthermore I had only five to ten minutes to spend with the popped-and-poured wines, so these notes can at best be described as brief snapshots.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2004 Bernard Burgaud Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Popped and poured. Clean, pure nose with some white pepper. Slightly grainy, earthy palate earth with nice cool, mid-toned blue fruits, meaty flavors and good acids. Really enjoy the cool tones here, not fatiguing. Structured, but approachable, without too much astringency. I'd give this another 1-2 years before opening a bottle. Hold.
Red
2006 Domaine Faury Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Popped and poured. Aromatic nose of super fresh high-toned fruits and white pepper. A light, elegantly feminine style, with pleasantly tart red fruits and a bit of estery sweetness. Lovely savory, meaty aftertaste with pepper and light tobacco tones. Very gentle light-extracted tannins, not at all brooding. Delicious already, although I've no experience with how this wine ages. Drink or hold.
Red
2005 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie Les Journaries / Maestria France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Popped and poured. Funky, spicy nose with some menthol. Savory red, earthy fruits with high acidity. Very tight, with increasing astringency on the back end. Hard to read, this really needed air but alas I'd already moved on.
Red
2005 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche / La Péroline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Popped and poured. A darker toned nose than the Journaries, with a bit of resiny oak. Grainy purple fruits, very tight and tannic and in need of aeration. Yet what astonishing purity, and pumping acidity, with noticeable length, and peppery, savory notes that appear with aggressive swirling. Clearly embryonic and in need of time, yet very Burgundian in its freshness and purity. Love the potential here. Hold.
