Dinner with the Britton's

Seattle, WA, USA

Introduction

Tonight our friends Mark & Bridget Britton came over for dinner. I grilled steaks with a variety of accompaniments, and we worked our way through an enjoyable lineup. All in all, it was an enjoyable evening of conversation about kids, politics, wine, travel, you name it. I don't quite know how the four hours passed so quickly.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Anyway, a few thoughts on the wines.

White
2002 La Poussie Sancerre France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
89 points
This was a great aperitif and accompaniment to a grilled salad in balsamic vinaigrette. Razor sharp, cutting, with remarkable focus and minerality. Grapefruit dances on the palate. This is as crisp and clean as I could ever imagine for a wine. Delicious and pure, such a bargain at $17.
Red
1989 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
The nose shows loads of cedar with a background of mint, tobacco, tar and some floral notes. The palate is thick, dense and chewy with ample structure, yet the wine is exceptionally balanced. I am surprised at how primary this is. It delivers a mouthful of earth and cassis with a black, dark, brooding personality. A delicious young Bordeaux with a decade ahead to round into form.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Isole e Olena Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico
90 points
This nose shows a stunning level of volatile acidity with lots of spirit as well. However, the viscous palate is gorgeous and complex with almond and macaroon that finishes with a sherry-like element and gorgeous nuttiness.
