Introduction

Last night on a cold, rainy Nor Cal evening our friends Sasha and Kiara came over for a little dinner...lamb shanks with beans mulligan (a Jacques Pepin) recipe and Traci's homemade rugulach for dessert. Sasha and Kiara also brought some tasty cookies from La Farina...the Champagne was excellent while the red wines underwhelmed me a bit on this evening. The shanks were awesome and so was the conversation...Happy Holidays Sasha & Kiara!!!

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Leclaire Gaspard Champagne Grand Cru Grande Réserve Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Sasha and Kiara brought this over. I don't ever recall having a Champagne from this producer but I'd definitely search this out again. Terrific. Beautiful nose of toasted brioche. The palate is lively and crisp with green apples, some red fruits, minerals and citrus. It's full yet amazingly crisp and long. Served with a meyer lemon granita.
Red
2005 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
This was opened around 3 pm and consumed around 7:30 pm. Disappointing bottle. It had blackberry fruit, some underbrush/spice but really lacking any verve or complexity. Wasn't corked or bretty and didn't really seem shut down...just maybe an okay bottle...did go well with lamb shanks with beans mulligan.
Red
2004 Cabot Vineyards Syrah Reed's USA, California, North Coast, Humboldt County
This was also consumed with the lamb shanks. Interesting Syrah with lots of acid that seems to be dominating the fruit at the moment. Crisp, bright, some underlying greeness but nice pepper and violets as well. I would prefer a little less acidity in this wine but fun to finally try one of these Syrahs..
Red
2006 Lynmar Estate Syrah Sonoma County USA, California, Sonoma County
Traci is a member of Lynmar's wine club. We really like their Chardonnays and some of the Pinots but have yet to try the Syrah. Well a bottle landed in her club shipment so we cracked this bad boy. A little disappointed with the showing of this as well as the other 3 wines. Definitely showing the 40% new oak it was raised in...but beyond that, really nice pepper, smoke with some middle weight blackberry fruit. Good acidity..so I think this would have benefited from a couple hours of air or a couple more years...suggested retail is $36 and that's fair.
