House of Glunz - A Fine Tasting of Burgundy

Old Town, Chicago, IL. Near the Northwest corner of Wells and Division Streets

Tasted February 17, 2009 by Claudio161 with 692 views

Introduction

Joined my friend to get exposure to some newer and a few slightly aged burgundies. They did not disappoint, but to get the good stuff - you'll need for fork over some decent dollars - but no more than what California charges these days. IMO, Burgundy may still very well be a better value than it's Cali counterparts.

Flight 1 - Domaine de Chateau du Chorey (4 notes)

White
2006 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Pernand-Vergelesses Les Combottes Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses
92 points
Nose: Honeysuckle accompanied by lemon peel and citrus. Later some white peaches makiing an entrance with some lychee in tow. Minerals, stones. Very very nice nose.

Taste: Fresh and refreshing. Nice chard notes with meyer lemon as a standout. Mouthfeel was glyceral and coating.

Overall: 92 points Tasting good now.
Red
2006 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Chorey-les-Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
86 points
Overall: Nice tart taste with some slight acetone notes; raspberry dodging around somewhere. Not a big fan. 85-87 points.
Red
2006 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Les Cras Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
89 points
Nose: Killer nose. My initial reaction was "it's great!". Also a excellent balance of fruit and wood

Taste: Brief flash of tarragon; Slightly dry on the finish; Acidity was a little astringent for my liking.

Overall: Needs some more time on its side. A little concerned over the retail price of 64.80 - not sure the quality was there for the price. 89 Points.
Red
2001 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Les Cras Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
92 points
Nose: Screams perfume/florals with some in-step raspberry notes. Some pungency in the way of truffles along with some nuttiness.

Taste: Good amount of minerals and acid to balance off the fruit. Great attack/mid/finish - all around looking good, balanced, and is set for better times with age.

Overall: Give me some! Really enjoyed and would buy more. 91-93 Points.

Flight 2 - Beth Hetherington, Michael Corso Selections (5 notes)

Red
2006 Jacques Girardin Bourgogne Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
86 points
Nose: First impression was that this was an "off nose". Typical (IMO) to other Bourgogne's that I have had in the past.

Taste: Red fruits were making a good stand buty they seemed to be splashed with some water that merged with a dash of acetone. Not a serious finish in my opinion.

Overall: Not a big fan. 86-87 points.
Red
2005 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Le Vaucrain France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
89 points
Nose: Dark cherries; raspberries; but a slight (minor) off note of wet wool socks

Taste: I thought the taste was very nice. Good spice component with fruits.

Overall: I think this is a good value wine. 89 Points.
Red
2005 Jacques Girardin Santenay 1er Cru Beauregard France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru
88 points
Nose: Nice light bodied wine that struck me as easy going and relaxed. Raspberry and strawberry take center stage.

Taste: Acidic; Wood notes; Good fruit.

Overall: Nose was better than the taste. 87-88 Points.
Red
2006 Domaine René Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
89 points
Nose: A little bit acetone with raspberries - good fruit structure though.

Taste: Lots of raspberries with some strawberries. Iron and minerals with some toasted aspects. Acidity is still there on the palate and this will need some time.

Overall: 89 points
Red
2005 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée Village France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
89 points
Nose: Perfume heavy with strawberries and raspberries. Toasted nuts make an appearance as well.

Taste: Great fruit with great presentation across the attach/mid palate/finish.

Overall: The acidity was still pretty high and therefore I believe it needs more time.... 89-90 points

Flight 3 - Teresa Matchett, Connoisseur Wines (5 notes)

Red
2002 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet L'Estimee France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
88 points
Nose: A light, somewhat feminine nose that strikes one as "beautiful"

Taste: Great amounts of strawberry, but not new-world-ish, light notes of wood.

Overall: A very light wine that would pair great with white-fleshed fish. 88-89 Points.
Red
2001 Domaine Heresztyn/Heresztyn-Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
90 points
Nose: Initial impression is that plenty of aromatics were going on here and some earth notes accompanied the initial olfactory presentation

Tatse: I think its a great Burgundy with great fruits - especially strawberry and cherries (but not in a cali way).

Overall: Good stuff and I really like this vintage. 90-91 points
Red
2003 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
89 points
Sight: Murkiness struck me

Nose: Florals, red fruits, great presentation of cherry and raspberries

Taste: Good presentation of fruit and well balanced with wood and tannins. Good overall coating mouth-feel.

Overall: Bettter than average finish. But I think it needs more sideways time. 89 Points.
Red
2004 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges Clos des Fourches France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
89 points
Nose: Nice burgundian funk on the nose with some earth notes. Strawberry and raspberry come out to play as well. Possibly some truffle notes as well with some herbaciousness.

Taste: Little bit heavier than what I was expecting, still pretty nice across the entire palate - hence balanced and showing in its youth the integration and quality of the grapes.

Overall: 90-89 points.
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
Nose: Initial presentation included some burgundian funk notes with some earthiness. More cherry notes than other burgs this evening - but there still is ample raspberry as well. Some sap/wood notes as well.

Taste: Great on and accross the palate, the one major fault was that it was slightly too dry on the finish for my taste - otherwise a nice show.

Overall: 89-91 points.

Flight 4 - White Burgundy (5 notes)

White
2006 Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
87 points
Nose: White peaches, oak, stone and a host of other minerals

Taste: Crisp - but very Chablisian on the palate.

Overall: If want Chablis, I will go buy it. 88-87 points
White
2007 Gilles Noblet Pouilly-Fuissé La Collonge France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
87 points
Nose: Fruits and florals were really really nice.

Taste: Great mouth coating. Slight acidity paired with a good amount of minerality.

Overall: 88-87 points
White
2006 Marc Colin et Fils Saint-Aubin La Fontenotte Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin
87 points
Nose: Good white tree fruits, but something kept me wanting

Taste: good mouth coast and good attack/mid palate/finish presentation.

Overall: not too important to me. 86-87 points.
White
2006 Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
88 points
Nose: Slight amounts of florals and yellow tree fruits and minerals.

Taste: A slightly tart finish, but mouth coating. Overall good balance with ample fruits.

Overall: 88 points - likely better with 5 more years sideways.
White
2001 Domaine Comtesse de Cherisey Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru La Genelotte France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru
91 points
Nose: Slight amounts of sulphur initially on the nose with some white truffles and sllight earthiness. White peaches as well with citrus zest undertones and yellow cling fruits.

Taste: Very pleasant, balanced and mouth-coating. Just the smallest hint at sweetness.

Overall: Very enjoyable - 91-92 points.
