Introduction

12 of us got together to drink Red Burgs priced $50 - $150. Three wines were pre-2000.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2006 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
83 points
Earthy nose. Cranberry fruit, and I don't like cranberries. No one liked this wine. Very thin. $43
Red
2004 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru
88 points
Way too much green tobacco leaf on the nose, and carries into the palate. This wine usually has really nice fruit, but not in this vintage. Some people liked it a lot, but most of us gave it "thumbs down" (for the money). $65
Red
2003 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
92 points
Bright Fruit nose, carries over to palate. Pretty light red fruits, cherry, raspberrry. Very silky and long finish. A usually high acid wine goes soft in low acid year. $89
Red
2004 Domaine Bruno Clair Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
87 points
Way too tight. Nose had a little bit of fruit. But other than that, this wine wasn't sharing ANYTHING. The only finish was sticky non-flavorful tannins. $33

Flight 2 (4 notes)

Red
1995 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
93 points
Nose of herbs, a little menthol on top of perfumed fruit. Very soft and pretty pedigree cherry fruit. Not unctuous enuf for me yet, but give this guy 5 years and WOW (hopefully). $88
Red
1996 Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
96 points
Killer big nose, blend of fruit and earth. Very balanced palate with nice acidity, deep red fruits. Still unctuous for a '96 red burg. Long finish. Keept getting better with time in the glass. After 3 hours score went from 93 to 96. $139
Red
1996 Dominique Laurent Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
flawed
DQ'd. Bad cork told the story. I hate that you can't get retribution for this sort of thing. Lloyd's of London anyone? $89
Red
2002 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
96 points
Now we're talking! nose: great blend of earth, big brite fruit. palate: deeper red fruits, a little smokiness. Killer long finish. $148

Closing

It's really hard to find decent Red Burgundy under $80!
