NYC Third Wed - Herman Story, Alesia, Radio Coteau, Groffier

Tasted June 17, 2009 by Cheryl with 429 views

Introduction

Last night we pulled together a collection of pinot from Cali, Chile and Burgundy. A fun night and the duck was as good as usual. PDH has no corkage on Weds now. The R-C and Groffier were my favorites.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2007 Herman Story Viognier White Hawk Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
Ok - The predominate flavor on this was rotten apple juice, which Brent described could have been oxidation. Color was orange/golden. After some time, I picked up stone fruits as well. I was a bit disappointed. This was almost sweet.
Red
2004 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Deep plum color. Medium acid and medium bodied. Funk and mushroom on the nose at first that blew away and left a little spice and oak. Ok.
Red
2006 Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir La Terre Promise USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Dark plum color. I thought this wasn't very complex but was an easy drinker over the evening. Ok.
Red
2004 Casa Marin Pinot Noir Lo Abarca Hills Chile, San Antonio Valley, Lo Abarca
This was served blind. All we knew was that this pinot, but not from Cali or Burgundy. Decanted one hour. Lots of dark fruit, which I like, but I wanted this to have a bit more body. Ok.
Red
2001 Prince Florent de Merode Corton-Clos du Roi France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
I liked this. Not my ordinary style, but nice. Floral, spice and oak with some alcohol on the palate, but not intrusive.
Red
2004 Radio-Coteau Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
Nice. Dark fruit soft with some earth and spice. This is my second R-C this year and I really like them a lot. These are fruit driven wines but with balance too. Very nice.
