Introduction

Thanks to Jeff Lewis for putting together a great tasting! Tribecca is one of those restaurants that us out-of-towners forget about, but they always comes through foodwise. Ryan, the sommelier, provided great service, too.

Jeff's wine, the '04 Colgin, came in first place with 16 points (two 1sts and five 2nd places), Jay's Aquilon received 2/2/2 for 12 points. Greenock Creek (Nano's?) received 8 points for third. All wines received at least one third place vote. The Cornas (mine, boo hoo) and the Ojai came in last with 1 and 2 points respectively.

In attendance: Nano, Jeff, Matt, Drew, Ramon, Scott, Jay & his Charming Wife

Flight 1 (9 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
Amythest color, truffle aroma. Fresh strawberry, less earth than promised on nose. Young tannins. Still angular
Red
1997 Ojai Syrah Santa Barbara County USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
90 points
Nose of Bright fruit, cola. Light plum, a little spice. Some nice acidity but it doesn't all integrate on the finish.
Red
1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Some age on color, nose. Cooked fruits, a little funk. Missing acidity and stucture. Flatlining? In a dumb phase?
Red
2004 Colgin Syrah IX Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Color shows this is going to be a big one. Dark high-pedigree fruit. Long lasting pepper, new oak finish. Great acidity.
Red
2003 Alban Vineyards Syrah Lorraine USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
88 points
Talcum powder on nose. Sweet blend of toasty oak, overripe fruit. This wine was made from raisins!
Red
2004 Greenock Creek Shiraz Alices Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
88 points
Off-putting nose. Rotting fruit? Overly sweet, strawberry, spiced fruit. Syrupy, sticks-to-the-front-of-mouth finish.
Red
1995 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
95 points
Older, dusty plum color. Earth, grilled meat juices on nose and palate. Soft, beautiful. Long finish.
Red
2004 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
91 points
Dusty color. Meat juices on nose. Grilled meat overtakes fruit on palate. Softened tannins. Light, pretty texture.
Red
2002 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Aquilon Spain, Aragón, Campo de Borja
92 points
Bright dark opaque color. Strawberry fruit. Big time baking spices! Very interesting. Spice and fruit, nicely integrated.
