Introduction

A group of us meet for a summer dinner of great whites, fantastic reds and super food
David W gathered a generous group of wine drinkers all looking to share a little DRC and the KOL offered up 2 bottles of Chevie to get us going in the right direction

Flight 1 - Served with Amouse Bouche of Beet Root Meringue with Foie Gras Cream and Deep Fried Frogs Legs (2 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
1986 Perrier-Jouët Champagne Brut Rosé Belle Epoque France, Champagne
flawed
Bottle was badly corked, unfortunate way to start dinner
White - Sparkling
1996 Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra-Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Disgorged 2005 i think. CD had thoughtfully brought this along as a just in case bottle. light yellow color with vibrant bubbles. on the nose this wine first showed a little burnt match but this blew off quickly. then it was like a bakers mix of yeast and dough and toasting bread. very long and precise in the mouth. quite pure and vibrant. it drank like a ver young champagne and should give pleasure for a long time

Flight 2 - Celariac Baked in Ash with Hazelnuts, Wood Sorrel and a Kromeski of Wild Boar (2 notes)

(wasn't sure what a Kromeski was but sure was tasty)

White
1993 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Brought by Mark "The King of Leflaive" Weiss, opened and breathing for hours before dinner. light yellow in color, looked youthful, first showed a nose of caramel and tropical fruits but every time i came back to it the wine showed new things, minerals started to appear, lemons it got deeper and deeper in the glass. in the mouth it was a sophisticated well balanced super glass of wine, showing a roundness that was lovely but also, if this is possible a very pure clean wine. it grew and grew in the glass over dinner showing some sweetish fruits and minerals. a great drink that was even better at the last sip!!!!
White
1999 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Also brought by KOL, yellow gold wine, first nose of smokey, minerally wet stones sitting in a wood bucket. this wine was rich and viscous in the mouth, the minerals and stones blending in with a lovely lemony flavor. very long well made wine, this wine was starting to let go of its youthful fat and is starting to move into that serious GC Leflaive stage. great wine, should be great in 10 years !!!

Flight 3 - Carpaccio of Venison on Toast (2 notes)

Red
1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
91 points
lightening around the edges.bit of earth on the nose, sweet cherries. in the mouth it gives sweet sour cherries, med weight, covers the tongue. med length, showed really well.
Red
2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
93 points
Deep purple wine, spicy cherries, brown sugar, deep heavy wine, lush and full wine, a fair amount of oak still present that makes itself known at the end. this will be a great bottle of wine down the road

Flight 4 - Ravioli of Wood Pigeon and Iberian Ham with a Veloute of Brown Bread (2 notes)

Red
1998 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
94 points
Deep dark color. sweet red fruits and cassis on the nose and mouth, a touch of savory/soy as well. silky tannins. med-heavy weight, very long finish. i thought the balance o this wine was amazing. real good juice with a long life ahead of it. hard to choose wine but this was my red WOTN
Red
2000 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
93 points
Clear purple wine, strawberries and sweet cherry candy on the nose. vibrant in the mouth as the acidity rolls in with the fruit. lots of high notes and length to this one. the tannins are a bit boxy. all in all this wine is in a really nice place right now but surely has a long life ahead of it.

Flight 5 - Lion of Lamb with White Aubergine and Garlic Emulsion, Tomato and Mollasses Jam (2 notes)

Red
1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
93 points
Dark wine, meaty red fruit nose, this wine was very tight, closed. it gave very little fruit before the tannins shut it down. the balance and percision were amazing but this wine was not giving very much pleasure tonight
Red
1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
94 points
dark red fruits on the nose, with some game and graphite. in the mouth there were delicious sour tart cherries, med high acidity, some game. well balanced and very long. surprisingly showed better than the '93 which was very tight and closed

Flight 6 - Eight Hour Short Rib of Beef with BeetRoot, Horse Radish and New Potato Puree (2 notes)

forgot a photo of the Beef, Sorry

Red
1976 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
94 points
A very sexy wine, still showing some red fruits on the nose and in the mouth. quite alive, well balanced and long. in a nice middle place of showing off its fading fruit and secondary flavors. the wine was very good
Red
1976 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
92 points
a well structured wine that was showing some fading strawberry fruit and some earthy mushroom flavors. loved the well balanced wine, drank younger than expected

Flight 7 - Selection of Cheeses and then Burnt Sugar Tart (1 note)

you have all seen cheese before, no photo

White - Sweet/Dessert
1983 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Lovely orange gold color. a nose orange/apricot marmalade. med weight in the mouth, viscous. still showing enough acidity so as not to be overly sweet. lovely finishing wine

Closing

It was a great night and other than the first champers all the wines were in good condition and showed very well. the table voted the '76 Grand Ech, the '91 Grand Ech & '01 RSV WOTN's. I have to say the whites showed really well
all and all a great night. lots of great wines that lived up to their reputations, fantastic food and great service.
I would love to make this an annual event!!!
