Flight 1 - Dinner at a Client's home on Friday evening. (7 notes)

White
2005 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, North Coast
Opened and tasted 3 separate bottles this evening. All showing much fresher than expected for an '05 Sauvignon Blanc. Dark straw color and aromatics of lemon, pear, apple and just a touch oxidation (in a good way). Palate had rich fruit with good minerality and cleansing acidity.
White
2003 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Opened two bottles. Bottle # 1; Powerful aromatics of waxy lemon, apple, and white flowers. Oily texture, rich ripe fruit with nice minerality and a lengthy finish. Bottle #2; not giving much at all on the nose and the palate was lacking the intensity on the palate. Did not appear to be flawed; just shut down.
White
2007 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Outstanding aromatics of lemon/lime, ripe pear, butter cookie, and some wet rocks. Fantastic richness on the palate. Great texture and core of minerality. Like a grand cru White Burgundy. Absolutely delicious.
Red
2002 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Big intense nose of red cherry/berry and plum with some toasty wood and very nice spice. Ripe fruit on the palate with some nice dark spice and good grip on the backend. Lengthy finish. A very nice CA pinot.
Red
1989 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Opened and tasted two different bottles this evening with identical characteristics. Classic Lafite aromatics of red currant and plum, wet tobacco, some cedar and forest floor. Elegant texture on the palate, somewhat dried red cherry and plum. Great acidity and minerality balance. Very long finish. Always an outstanding wine.
Red
2005 Sine Qua Non Syrah Atlantis Fe2O3~1a, b & c USA, California
A very big wine. Inky color with an intense nose of very dark fruits. Some black cherry, blue and blackberry, kirsch, and some herbal notes. Rich sweet fruit on the palate with some decent minerality. Long finish. A very nice wine.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1986 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Fantastic aromatics of baked apricot and yellow peach, grilled pineapple, and honeysuckles. Palate and nose also were a bit like a "leaner styled vanilla creme brulee". Very nice texture with refreshing acidity. A very nice d'Yquem, but not as fat and rich as some of the other great years of the 80s.

Flight 2 - Dinner at home with Friends Saturday night (5 notes)

Red
2004 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Beautiful nose of dark raspberry and cherry with "classic" Vosne baking spice. A bit leaner on the palate than the best of Meo's village Vosnes, but still quite enjoyable and the body filled out some after about two hours of air. Nice mineral notes and good structure. A very nice wine.
Red
2007 Belle Glos Pinot Noir Clark & Telephone Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
Intoxicating aromatics of dark raspberry and plum with brown baking spice, tea leaves, and a hint of soy. Ripe fruit on the mouthcoating palate with great spice throughout the finish. A bit cliche, but other than the riper palate, very Burgundian. Outstanding; it has been awhile since I've been this excited about a CA pinot.
Red
2001 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Decanted for 2 hours. Very Graves like nose with dark red berry and cherry with a bit of mocha, leather, and tobacco. Great texture, acid structure and minerality. Absolutely delicious. Unfortunately this was my last bottle of the '01.
Red
2002 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
Decanted 2 hours. Intoxicating aromatics; red currant and plum, wet tobacco, leather, forest floor, and cedar. Lush red fruit on the palate with a nice mineral core. Lengthy finish. Always one of my favorite bottlings from Mondavi.
Red
1996 Château L'Evangile France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Popped and poured. Black cherry and plum on the nose and palate with cocoa and a hint of espresso. Slight forest floor/herbal component as well. Nice texture on the palate with a moderate finish. Very nice wine.

Flight 3 - Sunday late afternoon through the early hours of the next morning. (17 notes)

White
2005 Château de Puligny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Light straw color. Very tightly wound lemon and lime nose with lots of wet stone and some toasty wood. Lean citrus and apple on the nose with some smoke and a great core of minerality. Moderate finish.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Tradition Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Richer aromas than the Egly VP served alongside it. Ripe apple and pear, lemon, nice yeasty component. Lots of bubbles and good acidity. Toasty style. Very delicious.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru VP France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Notes of toasted brioche and almond with ripe apple and pear. Not as much acidity as expected, but still very good. The regular Brut beat this by a mile today.
White
2004 Domaine Jean Chartron Chevalier-Montrachet Clos des Chevaliers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Darkest color of the flight. Very nutty character with honeyed lemon on both the palate and nose. Decent acidity and mineral, but not as good as expected. Flawed bottle perhaps?
White
2002 Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Darker yellow/straw color. Lush lemon nose and palate with intense mineral aromatics and backbone. A touch of forest floor as well. Great intensity on the palate and finish. A fantastic wine.
White
2002 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Very tightly wound lemon and lime with some toasted almond. The palate started off a bit lean, but after an hour it fattened up. Beautiful minerality and white flower characteristics. Fantastic acidity on the finish. My favorite of the flight.
Red
2003 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Dark plum/berry. Great spice on both the nose and palate. Fantastic minerality. Notes of soy, baking spice and forest floor. An outstanding wine. Lots of power on the finish.
Red
2003 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Wow from the start. Seductive aromatics of sweet dark fruit, berry and plum, clove, and some cinnamon. Violets and dark flower. Fantastic texture and grip on the palate. Rich fruit and great minerality. Absolutely stunning.
Red
2003 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Somewhat shut down aromatically. Hints at dark cherry cola on the nose with a bit of flower. On the palate, very primary red fruits with high acid and tannins with a lot of grip on the finish. Became lost in the flight with the two '03 Rousseau's.
Red
2007 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Primarily red cherry, briary berry and plum with roasted brown spice. Sweet red fruit on the palate with nice baking spice on the finish. Bright acidity.
Red
2007 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Decanted 2 hours. Very meaty nose with cool dark red and blue fruits; plum and berry. Grilled sausage and game with notes of cocoa and spice. Very fruit forward. A great Bonnes Mares
Red
2001 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Sweet dark cherry and berry, smokey bacon and intense dark spice on the nose and palate. Beautiful texture with lots of structure and concentrated fruit. A very seductive wine. Beautiful.
Red
1995 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Nice anise note is the first thing to come from the glass. Dark currant and plum with forest floor and wet tobacco. Sweet dark fruits on the palate with a lot of stuffing. A strong mineral backbone with lots of acidity. Beat the '96 served beside it tonight.
Red
1996 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Sweet red fruits, plum/cherry/berry on the nose and palate with some cedar and (nice) vegetal notes. Lusher fruit on the palate than the '95 and this one was the initial favorite of the flight, but after a half hour the '95 beat it.
Red
1981 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
From Magnum obtained from the Domaine 2 months ago. Dried red fruits (cranberry, cherry, rhubarb) on the nose with some earthy spice and a bit of truffle. Great on the palate, lots of mineral and structure. Nice acidity on the finish. A excellent wine but somewhat young in this format.
Red
2000 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Decanted 5 hours; library release from the Domaine 2 months ago. Somewhat overripe dark red fruit, cherry, plum and currant. Notes of leather, forest floor and baking spice. Lots of grip on the finish and good acidity. Showing a bit more mature than another bottle from the same case a month ago.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Zind-Humbrecht Tokay Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal Sélection de Grains Nobles France, Alsace
Deep golden orange color. Aromas of burnt orange peel and honeyed lemon with apricot and tea. Very lush on the palate with intense ripe fruit. Fantastic balance of minerality and acidity. Very long finish. Absolutely stunning.

Flight 4 - Jen's going away party (5 notes)

White
2008 Alamos Torrontés Argentina, Salta
Excellent floral notes mixed with the white peach and flower aromatics. Good fruit on the palate as well with a nice finish. Not mindblowing, but a great little wine.
Red
1988 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Very perfumed aromatics of dried red currant, cherry, and cranberry. Cedar and tobacco as well. Fairly lean on the palate, but there is still some ripe fruit left. A good deal of acidity finish. A good wine.
Red
2002 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
A very odd showing. Tried after decanting for 1hr and had corky aromatics and a palate of cardboard. Left in the decanter for another 2 hours and it kept getting worse. Poured back into the bottle. The next day tried again and the cork smell and taste was gone. Dark currant and cassis with chocolate and leather and a nice bit of minerality. A very long finish, but there was something just a touch off. There was still a third of the bottle left and I tried it again the third day. The fruit had softened up a bit and was more giving, but the slight corky note returned. Not sure what to think of this bottle..
Red
2002 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Decanted for 1hr. Pretty nose of red fruits with cigar box and an herbal note. Some nice density on the palate with good acidity throughout and a mostly mineral finish. Very fine tannins.
Red
1982 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Library release. On the nose mostly cherry fruits with a good bit of tar and earth with some tobacco. A fairly youthful palate with fresh berry and earth. A good bit of acid on the moderate finish.
