At Residence in Oakland Hills, CA

Tasted October 10, 2009 by N2Vin with 522 views

Introduction

Dinner with the Whites, Nancy Collins, Bob and Teresa Burke, Cindy Johnson, and Jeff Melrose featured aged Lavuki and Dutch Gouda cheeses, duck liver pate with duck liver terrine, prosciutto, calabrese salami, and porchetta. A chanterell salad with bean and red pepper, followed by duck confit and roasted duck breast. Summed up nicely with an orange and caradmom flan. A wonderful dinner and great hosts. I was given free access to their ample cellar and did some damage as the following wines attest:

Fantastic nose of super ripe red berry, sweet oak, chocolate and crushed flowers. The fruit is so sweet and compelling on this wine. Taste confirms the powerful ripe black cherry, raspberry, mocha, rose and creamy oak. Long and sensual finish.
Red
2000 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley

One of the best 2000 Cali Cabs around. Great prefumy nose of still ripe black cherry and black berry. Fruit still dominating this wine. Tasted of black berry, cassis and toasted oak. Still youthful. No visible sign of age. Tannins are smooth and ripe with no edge. Good length. Good wine
White
1995 Champalou Vouvray France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Suprisingly fresh wine. Hints of apple, pear, and fig on the nose. Clean, clear and light bodied. Fruit was still sweet and fresh. Slight residual sugar and a short finish. A refreshing wine though.
Red

Red

Classic wine. Mature nose of black berry, saddle leather, cassis, cigar box and toasted oak. Only slight bricking. Tasted mature and evolved, but right on target. Very nice mix of fruits, oak, leather, mocha and earthy herb notes. Very smooth and rounded. No harshness but mouthfilling cabernet with perfect balance. Very nice!
