Introduction

Domaine Leflaive dinner sponsored by Knightsbridge Wine Shoppe in Chicago

Flight 1 - Pre-dinner tasting (9 notes)

White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Verzé
Clean, pure Leflaive fruit. Relatively light bodied (though not for Macon). Great purity. Nice.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Âne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Rich and buttery, but a bit angular. Sort of gets lost in Leflaive's more fat, Meursault-like general style. Enjoyable.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Some flint and smoke. Clean, tense palate. Forward. Refined, but a bit hollow in the middle. Nice.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
More overt fruit. Tropical. Balanced and full throughout. Rich and opulent, with tangy acidity. Very nice.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Great richness and balance, with nice clarity of flavor. Firm mineral character. Tense and juicy. Very nice.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
More muted nose, showing some sulfur. Full but really balanced. Lots of power. Super tense, with a fine grained, almost powdery finish. Really nice.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Bright, pure, and opulent in a characteristic Leflaive style. Fat for Chevalier, but still very clean. Really refined, patrician wine - sort of Combettes++. Great tension. Really good.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
A fat feel, but somewhat angular and not super giving. Tense, somewhat coarse structure. Somewhat disconnected in its youth. Still, very nice.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Some tropical fruit. Not quite as big or fat as expected, but very full; Pucelles+. Well structured which stops this a bit short. Really nice.

Flight 2 - Terrine of Butter Poached Lobster with Lilttleneck and Topneck Clams, Mussels, and Creme Fraiche (2 notes)

White
2004 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Total reductive sulfur notes. All matchstick. Some underlying fruit on the palate, but not particularly drinkable.
White
2005 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Clean, cool fruit. Some mineral and stone notes. Relatively fat and lower acidity. Surprisingly ready. Nice wine.

Flight 3 - Seared Sea Scallop with Sunchoke, Cucumber, and Grapefruit (2 notes)

White
2004 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Some sulfur notes - is this the norm for '04 Leflaive? Yellow citrus. Lighter palate. Somewhat raw structure. OK.
White
2006 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
A rich, expressive wine. Full, with some caramel/butterscotch notes. Surprisingly forward for '06. Full. Very nice.

Flight 4 - Slow Roasted Halibut with Confit Leek, Roasted Shallot, Lemon, and Butter (1 note)

Missed an '06 Combettes here

White
2006 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Fat wine. Refined and pure, with a great tension to the palate. Fleshy, but still a firm acidic backbone. Very nice.

Flight 5 - Red Snapper with Lentils, Bacon, and Trumpet Royale Mushroom (2 notes)

White
2000 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
More orange overtones, with a mature weightiness. Great minerallity to the finish. Some chalkiness on the finish. A bit disconnected, but really good.
White
2006 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Some limestone and chalk notes. Raw acidity, with masked mineral notes. Refined. Lemon rind. Very nice.

Flight 6 - St. Andre with Apple (1 note)

White
2006 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Pear and tropical fruits. Nice weight - fat palate. Better at this stage than '06 Chevalier. Somewhat back heavy. Very nice.

Flight 7 - One More (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1997 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Fat for young Salon, and not as aggressive as expected. Some yellow citrus fruits but plenty of weight and less minerallity than usual. Firm mousse. Very nice.
