Terry Theise Champage Tasting

Columbus, OH

Tasted December 10, 2005 by psmith with 723 views

Introduction

This was a tasting organized by Gentiles, a wine store in Columbus, and Vanguard Wines, the local distributor for Therry Theise and his "Grower Champagnes." The tasting was well organized and the two distributor representatives were well prepared and able to answer questions on the wines.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. A. Margaine Champagne Brut Cuvée Traditionelle France, Champagne
A hard wine showing some doughy apple notes amid a tart, austere acidic backbone. Good length for and style for the price. **+/5
White - Sparkling
N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Lots of class for its price. A toasty wood note but doesn't get at all heavy like Vilmart sometimes can. Toasted brioche, ripe apple and pear, and hints of wildflower. Well textured with fine bead. Well balanced with firm acidity. ***/5
White - Sparkling
N.V. René Geoffroy Champagne Cuvée de Réserve Brut France, Champagne
Fresh apple pie, some earth-driven notes with white flowers from the Meunier. Crisp and generally well balanced. Some autolysis character. **+/5
White - Sparkling
N.V. Jean Lallement Champagne Grand Cru Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Like fresh baked sugar cookies on the nose. Some sweet lemon notes, sea air, and yellow flowers. A bit tart on the finish but no really hard edges and quite clean. ***-/5
White - Sparkling
1997 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Premier Cru Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Somewhat musty with unbaked bread dough, some forest floor and more characteristic fruits. A bit forward and punchy - boarders on heavy. **+/5
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Just traces of strawberry with light toasted biscuit and candied sweet cherry and vanilla. Balanced sweetness on the palate which holds up well to the tart acidity. A bit awkward but great flavors and character. ***-/5
White - Sparkling
N.V. A. Margaine Champagne Demi Sec Traditionelle France, Champagne
A bit mousy on the nose with some pure sweet lemon and apple pie notes. Well balanced if a bit simple. Would probably work well with the right foods. **/5
