Christianne's Place in SF

Introduction

Last night Traci and I headed over the Bay Bridge and into SF to have dinner with Christianne at her place. We started with a couple of cheeses (Montgomery Cheddar and Delice de Borgogne), then moved onto to some crab/pepper salad gougeres and then finally some simple Kobe beef sliders with truffle aioli. Wonderful night of very good wines, great conversation and terrific yet simple food!

The only disappointment on the night was the corked 2004 Realm "Farella Vineyard" wine...oh well.

Christianne was going to open this on New Years Eve but decided that we had too much wine already so she would hold it back. Glad she did. Popped and poured and consumed over 1 hour or so. Initially it was fairly tight and racy with some sulfur/gun metal, limestone, honey and wet crushed rock minerality. A little lean through the mid palate and back end but gained weight by the second glass and started to round out a bit. Glad it did.

After about 1/2 hour, this really started to sing. Still a bit racy with very nice acidity, the pronounced honey faded to more of a meyer lemon/citrus note, but retained that smoke and gun powder, some tropical fruit and a nice richness to the mid and back of the palate. Long finish. Superb!!! If you have these decant them for about 1/2 - 1 hour and enjoy the ride. 93+/100

This wine followed the 01 Dauvissat "La Forest" Chablis. Both wines accompanied some crab/pepper salad gougeres.

Noticeably richers and sweeter impression than the Chablis. The nose on the wine jumps out at you with more rich tropical fruit and some stony minerality. An interesting palate that again shows some richness, smoke, a little glycerin like quality, some dark/savory spiciness that I couldn't figure out, and then finishing with an intense lemon quality. I really like this wine and it will be interesting to see how in fleshes out in a couple years. 90-92/100

We initially set about to open a 2004 Realm "Farella Vineyard" Red Wine (mostly Cab based IIRC). However, as I pulled the cork the old familiar scent of TCA followed the cork out of the bottle. Darn.

So, we needed something to accompany the Kobe beef sliders with truffle aioli....Christianne cracked a 1996 Ch. Talbot. Popped it, smelled the wine (good!) and into the decanter for a quick airing out.

This wine is drinking pretty darn well right now. Impeccably balanced the nose is a gorgeous mix of black currant, cedar and pepper. On the palate, again, this is just well balanced and perfect for sipping with food. Leather, red fruits, vanillan spice and a little bit of black licorice with terrific acidity, sweet tannins and a short-medium finish. If the finish fills out a bit more I can see giving this another point or two. For those looking for a "blockbuster" bordeaux experience pass on this wine....Very enjoyable! 91+/100
