Introduction

The scoring during this night was done on the 20-point scale. I had to adjust the original scoring to the 100 scale.

Flight 1 - just to come into the stuff. (2 notes)

Red
1995 La Casella Prugnolo Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
75 points
group average: 76,5

nose: ripe, stable, black fruits
mouth : nice fresk acids, raspberry, tabacco. finish a bit short.
okay wine
Red
2000 Triacca Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Santa Venere Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
70 points
group average : 70

nose: butter, not very nice..
mouth: bit sweet supple, light wine with a bit of red fruits (cherry)
finish: hardly..

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2002 La Velona Rosso di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
83 points
group average: 76,5

nose: leather, mocca, cacao
mouth: very nice and fresh acids, little butter, lots of tannins, but also fruit enough. nice warm wine
Red
1997 La Casella Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
60 points
disappointment.
probably an off bottle not tasty at all.
reminiscent of a corked bottle but it wasn't. All I really remember is the peperoni nose.

Flight 3 - let the serious tasting begin! (2 notes)

Red
1998 Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
The first big brunello this evening.
nose of vanilla, stable, raspberries leather and licorice.
confirmed in the mouth. very nice warm glass of wine. a real plasure with a good italian meal.
not to store for long.. drink in 2 years.
Red
1999 Fattoria del Cerro Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Antica Chiusina Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
84 points
A bit disappointing.
not bad, but clearly the lesser of the caparzo. Again peperoni on a nobile's nose. don't like that.
bit too tannic with too little fruit to back up.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

the 91 was pretased and at that occasion it was dreadful.. well.. see for yourself

Red
1991 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vigna del Nocio Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
90 points
distinguished nose, gestoofd fruit, belegen.
nose confirmed. nice acidity, tannins well integrated. forest fruits, raspberry bit cherry. very nice
nice warm and ong finish
Red
1994 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
87 points
lots of cream and butter on the nose.. this is not a (typical) tuscan wine. still inetresting nose with ceder and cassis.
very ripe juice firm tannins. just an okay wine. not very interesting in the mouth.
finish okay.

Flight 5 - The Oldies.... (2 notes)

These wines were not served blind. they deserve the proper attention from the beginning. It was clear that the biondi-santi was badly stored... :(

Red
1964 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
80 points
Wine was not prperly stored. kork fell into the bottle with a little push. opened 8 hours prior to rasting ,decanted.
color: gold/brown like a tired vinsanto. not clear.
nose: oxidized, but still exciting in a way. nose inproved with time.
tasted not blind: well, for a not well stored 40 year old wine: not bad. you just need to taste it with expectations adjusted to it.
sherry calvados tones. currants, nuts,
diluted finish.
difficult to discribe, but it was axciting and certainly not undrinkable.
Red
1975 Fanetti Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Tenuta S Agnese Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
88 points
A big surprise.. who would have thought that a Nobile could last for 30 years?
Surely an old wine and surely it is past its peak but: this i a wine that has arrived into the next level.. a different kind of peak.
curious, exciting stuff.
but not in balance..
educational wine and even a pleasure.
vegatal nose.. bit vinsanto nose.
acidity overrules the last bit of fruit. currants, vanilla, cacao, mocca even..

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
1999 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
lovely balanced fruit. lots to taste here; very nice but maybe a bit of a cellarmade wine. modern I mean.
but again: great joys here. no too tannic, nice acids adnd a long and warm finish.
Red
2000 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vigna Asinone Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
89 points
And again those peppers on the nose, but this time it was backed up enough by fruity, vanilla aroma's and caramel. very jammy fruit in the mouth, tiny bit of oxidized aroma's.
bit tannic finish.
still a very pleasant wine though

Flight 7 - Superflight (2 notes)

Flight of the evening.

Red
1997 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
95 points
What a wine!! really a surprise, taking into account al the negative judgements on this wine. opened 12 hours prior to tasting
Shows it's class. has a lot of potential.
in the nose fine aroma's : stable, dark fruits, vailla and a little chocolate
superstructured wine. there are some tertiar flavours, but a lot of fruit, fresh acids and still a lot tannins, but the good ones.. enough too age for a long time.
Red
1997 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Grandi Annate Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
94 points
great wine!
very complex nose: lots to sniff here... dark fruits, stable, mocca, anice..
all this is confirmed in the mouth. little too much wood. great strucure.
long warm finish

Flight 8 (2 notes)

This is wh I love Brunello and why I should really store away some...

Red
1990 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
95 points
ranked number two of the evening.

what a wine... at its peak now and probably will stay at this peak for 2 more years.
typical brunello nose... superstructure. tannins completely and beautifully integrated. everything on its place

finish a bit short for this wine.
Red
1990 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
another winner. just lost it in its flight from the altesino riserva, but in the total ranking very high.
stable, leather, tobacco in the nose.
fruit: cranberry, raspberry. tannins well integrated. nice acidity and a warm long finish.
little tired.

Flight 9 (2 notes)

Red
1990 Boscarelli dei Boscarelli Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
89 points
delicious wine.
bit watery in the mouth and the finish a bit harsh but on the whole: very nice glass.
shows enough fruit, vanilla, acidity to have a good time with it.
Red
1986 Château Sociando-Mallet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
85 points
butter on the nose. bit tired/ closed nose
very ripe juice. dry tannines bit one dimensial
just okay wine

Flight 10 (2 notes)

see flight 8: TOP!

Red
1985 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
chocolate, mushrooms, shows its age, but not really tired. still fruity and juicy.
great taste. aristocratic wine
Red
1985 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
great wine. maybe just past its peak.
licorice, dark red fruit, stoofperen and laurier.
just another party....
finish is a bit harsh..
