This is seriously impressive stuff. I was expecting much less for the $30 tariff, and this outperformed most $60+ domestic pinots I've tried in the past 2 years. Very complex. Very well-balanced despite the listed alcohol # (14.8%). I didn't get any of the heat. Nose is dark red fruit, mocha, smoke (wildfires?), some mushroom/earth. The mouthfeel was silky, and I'm trying to find more of this for a weekly drinker.

8/25/12, 8:36 AM - How heavy were the smoke notes? That's definitely what you were getting, since Anderson Valley was hit hard in '08 with wildfires. I tried this maybe 18 months ago and the smoke note was so huge it was hard to drink. But if it has blown off, that would be great!

PNP at "The Grill" in Westlake with a nice double cut pork chop. Cherry and bubble gum with a touch of wood on the nose. Fruit forward but in a good way with cherry and spices on the palate. A little heavy on alcohol especially on the pour but did mellow out some. Light on the tannins with a long finish. The wine was approachable but could probably use 6 months to year on it's side.

On the palate, an initial hit of unripe raspberry, followed by clove and cinnamon. This is very light in body, but is thrown out of balance by bigger green-tasting tannins on the finish, which isn't particularly long. A nice change of pace from a typical, riper Pinot at $15, but nothing to get really excited about.

11/25/10, 5:56 PM - After revisiting this wine, where I think it misses is that it tastes empty right down the center of the palate. All the flavors, tannins and action on this wine happens on the edges of the tongue and mouth. The center of the palate is left utterly empty, and almost just tastes like water.

The nose shows some alcohol, which is unappealing. But once I get past it, I get some smoked meat notes, blueberry and unripe plum. A good amount of wood on this nose too. On the palate is some seriously tart blueberries. The wine is relatively light in body and also tastes of brambles. The finish of bitter cranberries persists.

4/18/10, 7:41 AM - I drank half the bottle on the 16th, corked, and drank the second half last night on the 17th. After a night in the bottle, the Core Red Blend was SIGNIFICANTLY better. With the re-taste, I would have given it an 81 the first night, and an 88+ last night. So 84 seems like a fair median.

The blue and black fruit was purer and more ripe tasting, there was a great mid-palate of ground coffee, and the body of this wine was deliciously mouth-filling. Great stuff that apparently needed a LOT of air to show its stuff.
