2020 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Le Mont Chenin Blanc

Le Mont is located above the tufa caves and east of the Huet vineyard on the first plateau of Vouvray, the so-called Première Côte, and faces south. It is mentioned as early as the 15th century and has been highly appreciated since then. Like the other two vineyards, Le Mont, with its nine hectares, is solely owned by the Huet estate and was acquired by Gaston Huet in 1957 as the last of the three vineyards. It is characterized by the topsoil, several meters deep, of a pebbly flint, sometimes the size of a fist, called perron there, in deep green clay. The base is the usual Turonian tuff limestone.

The harvest took place in 2020, between September 7 (the earliest date in the history of the winery) and September 25. As the vintage was strongly characterized by sun and warmth, mainly residually sweet wines were produced. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed and fermented spontaneously. Malolactic fermentation took place only in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. Moelleux means at Huet: between 45 and 55 grams of residual sweetness. In this case it is 49 grams.

The 2020 Le Mont Moelleux is fresh and lively, fine, elegant and eternal. The complex bouquet opens with yellow and green apples, lemons, limequats and grapefruits including zests, as well as some slightly exotic notes of papaya and just-ripe pineapple. In addition, there are subtle notes of curry leaves and apple peel. On top of that is the scent of crushed quartz rock so typical of Le Mont.

On the palate, the 2020 Le Mont Moelleux appears concentrated and complex from the start. The 49 grams of sweetness are noticeable, but are integrated quite wonderfully into the lively acidity and dancing minerality. The Moelleux has an amazing amount of grip and clear phenolics, along with ripe fruit, some tart orange notes and an intriguing mix of flint and salt that remains present until the last corner of the long finish. The wine is, of course, only at the beginning of its evolution, which will easily last two decades. But in the balance that Chenin Blanc offers, it is already fantastic.

2019 Domaine Pierre Guillemot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières Pinot Noir

Until a few years ago, only very few Savigny specialists knew about the 1er Cru site Aux Serpentières in Savigny-lès-Beaune. The reputation of Aux Serpentières grows year after year with the work of the Guillemot brothers, who are in the process of moving it to the forefront of Savigny-lès-Beaune. The site, which is very rich in marl, is located above the Rhoin river, in the middle of the sites of Aux Clous, Aux Gravains (where there is also a very good wine of the Guillemots), Aux Pointes and Aux Guettes. Most of the vines there on the 1.27-acre parcel are around 65 years old and were planted by Pierre Guillemot, the grandfather and founder of the winery, who died in 2019.

Color
Deep cherry red

Nose
The wine balances the ripeness and dark fruitiness of the vintage with tremendous density, gossamer tannin and deep minerality. This "1er Cru" again shows that so fantastic balance of an earthy pithiness and the floating light elegance and freshness. And the pithiness is a guarantee for quality and longevity, especially in the interplay with the lively acidity. The nose reveals notes of raspberries and wild strawberries, sweet cherries and beet, but also dark chocolate, some pepper, blood orange, tobacco and a little charcoal smoke.

Palate
On the palate, a subtle sweetness and a contrasting earthy and tinty note combine with the herbal notes of the co-fermented raps. All of this is wrapped up by the fine tannin already mentioned and the lively, electrifying combination of acidity and minerality. It has greatness and is almost unique in this price segment.

Bought this from a natural wine bar in Budapest. Very natural and untamed nose of wild strawberries, rose petals (like Prieure Roch wines), hints of Korean rice wine smell? Very light bodied, only 11.5% alcohol and should be served chilled (one might argue it should be served as an popstick!) Funky. (74/100)

2/25/22, 9:39 AM - 74 points for this wine are like a slap in the face of the winemaker. Such a thing gives one if the wine were flawed, but he is not from their description. Yours sincerely ...

Domaine Vacheron, Sancerre Le Paradis 2019

Wine Information
Le Paradis is a steep, south-facing slope of Oxford limestone covered by a fine surface clay. The vineyard is located about two kilometers south of Sancerre. The Sauvignon Blanc vines are more than 40 years old. The wine is aged in Stockinger barrels for about ten months after (spontaneous) fermentation.

Color
light to medium straw yellow

Nose
The 2019 Sancerre Le Paradis presents itself as an exceedingly fresh, straight, bright and already punchy Sauvignon Blanc on the nose. In addition to many citrus notes from lime to lemon to grapefruit, a hint of flint and smoke shows up, but only as a coating, not as a defining element. There are also chalky, chalky notes, a bit of green apple and herbs.

Palate
What can only be guessed at on the nose becomes obvious on the palate. It is the pure power and intensity of this very mineral, purist, punchy and cool Sancerre. Le Paradis appears pure, bright and resonant on the palate. Yet the energy simmers and the Sauvignon Blanc seems as clear as a mountain stream. Along with the citrusy fruit, there are iodine-salty notes, which of course adds to the drinkability. Only on the palate does a bit of cassis and elderberry become apparent, but this remains quite fine as well as measured and is offset with a very slight sweetness. Le Paradis pushes forward unflinchingly and on and on into the long, tight finish.

2007 Didier Dagueneau Silex Pouilly-Fumé Sauvignon Blanc

2007 Silex. Didier Dagueneau's last vintage. Bottle in perfect condition. On the first evening there is a lot of lemon and lime going on. Lemon grass, curry leaf, stone, smoke and burnt rubber subtly in the background. Austere and precise. On the palate there is again this basket of yellow and green citrus fruits, again burnt rubber and caramel. Very juicy with lots of pressure on the palate. On the second evening there is still this perfect precision. The caramel has disappeared, but the Silex has become creamy. Everything fits together, the Silex is salty and limy and has so much. This is what i call minerality. One of the best, maybe the best Sauvignon blanc i have had so far.

Mainly grenach and carignan with some cabernet and tempranillo. This has lovely perfumed black fruits on those nose. There's sweet black fruit on the palate with a nice acidity and freshness to balance the fruit. Good structure.
