Big, powerful and extracted. The alcohol at 15.8% is not very well concealed. Gobs of red fruit with baking spice and red licorice. It is well built and fun to drink as a cocktail wine but not worth the price as you can get similar Paso wines at half the price that are equivalent or better.

Got promoted at work, present for myself. This wine is amazing, checks every box, and I can't imagine who wouldn't like this. At 12 years old, it has the exuberance of a barrel sample. No heat, tannins on the way out, tons of old school leather graphite cedar forest floor and some blueberry pie. To be fair, it carries a ridiculous price tag, but I guess this is the world we created. This will last longer than any new world wine. Amazing juice.

Excellent Pomerol. Tasted as part of a 4 bottle vertical 2008-2011 by Bear Dalton from Houston Specs.
Deep red opaque color, strong fruit nose, superb deep fruit taste, oak in background. A classic right bank Bordeaux. Majority Merlot. This is a sipping wine, better than a food accompaniment. Price $53

2007 Mollydooker Shiraz Carnival of Love McLaren Vale
I’m not sure what this says about either my wife or me. On May 21 we opened a bottle of Carnival in her hospital room at Northern Westchester Hospital. I’ve reviewed Carnival of Love every Valentine’s Day since 2008; it became a tradition for us after our first tasting in 2007. The 2007 vintage still impresses, with a lovely smoked black fruit nose. On the palate you get mouthful of creamy black fruit. We drank the bottle over the course of four nights (I refrigerated the bottle between dinners), and I don’t recommend saving an open bottle. Day 2 was as good as day 1, but day 3 lost its edge. On day 4 it was no longer pleasurable. On Thursday morning (5/29) my bride of over 30 years died after a year-long battle with lung cancer. Rest well my love.

6/5/14, 12:41 PM - Thanks for sharing with the CT community. This is a touching illustration of how a shared bottle of wine can seal and preserve a fond memory. My sympathies for your loss. I just may open this bottle tonight and raise a glass . . . .
