Drank this wine in summer '23 with crab cakes. Really nice wine, but what a crazy price. I only bought it because I had a $50 gift certificate. A heavily oaked sauvignon blanc. No place that I know of treats a sauv. blanc this way besides bordeaux. I would love to have a few more, but not at the going price of $50 something per bottle.

Last of six (6). Similar to prior experience Red cherry, raspberry, with earthy/floral notes. Lively on the palate; acidity present provides required lift to counter richly laden fruit. Delivers lovely even finish. Fully integrated but still plenty of life here. Drink soon.

8/17/23, 6:03 PM - Agree w/TN. This vintage an excellent cellar dweller. Drank my btl. tonight initially well-chilled on a summer evening on the patio w/a light sausage meal -- great match -- flavors galore, medium body and lively. Should last few more years in cool cellar. No rush w/Thivin.

Such a lovely Beaujolais, its quality remarked upon by all. Full of fruit, attention-grabbing energy, a mineral edge. Perhaps at peak, but probably could be enjoyed for another five years or so (wish I had more...).

I coravined a bottle a month ago. Back to the cellar with about 4 oz drank. I poured a fat glass again last night and let it acclimate. This coravin disruption exercise was done deliberately to give me a sense of where this style of wine (totally out of character for LTM) is headed with time. Still full of dark red fruit, with great depth. Developing some earthy vibes under it, showing the aging potential of this wine. We get a good amount of cedar and some graphite now, with nice flower shop scents and a faint puff of coffee. All of this, with fruit that is now in transition, absent of that beautiful freshness of youth, and a bit in limbo. The acidity is very much here and should let things meld slowly over time and maintain health. Based on this, I say the next bottle is 3 years away. HOLD_

PnP, from 0.375l bottle, diam cork, 13% Alc., deep purple red color.

Nose: Complex sweet black fruit, very nice.

Palate: Tasteable quality in the glass, harmonious and good balance, dosed use of wood, good intensity, nice expression of violet and some black cherry fruit, at the end raspberry, good complexity even multilayered. Enjoyable and promising wine!

After three disappointments from 2020 Bdx, e.g. Grand Puy Lacoste (no notes taken), Malartic Lagraviere and La Gurgue, this wine was really convincing. Quality of components, structure and fruit are right here, a good development can be expected as well, 92+.

Nervy and vibrant, but plenty of soil character here. Also a good bit of reduction. I’d give this a couple more years, but if you like matchstick in with your pinpoint ripe Chardonnay, this may just be for you. Like it a lot, but I suspect this could turn into a torrid affair with 2-5 years in the cellar. Quite good now, but more I store I suspect.

Solid red rim, no signs of aging. Powerful and nowhere near its peak yet. A lovely wine already but this will definitely get better. I won’t open another bottle for 2 years. This will be special when it eventually unfurls. Update: after 4 hours in a decanter after opening and half the wine returned to the bottle after drinking, the next day this had softened beautifully and was quite remarkable.

Bought 2b for 8e/b after visiting Les Malandes and tasting this and number of its Chablis (which we also bought)-- from vines of 30+ years. Sauvignon blanc in Chardonnay territory. Light gold with hint of green; some spice on the nose, some citrus; crisp, very good mouthfeel. Almost delicious. Would buy again. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I considered this notable+ when considering quality, age, and price.

Leaf Day. I chose this day as I didn’t want the fruit overly expressed as it had so much last time I tasted it. Today - virtually no evolution in the glass as expected - still ruby from core to rim. On the nose there’s smoke, earth, a bit of funk and red fruit with just a touch of herbs. The palate is ripe fruit but not overdone with a lovely savoury element slipping in now. On this day it’s drinking beautifully - soft on the palate and yet still showing fruit, savoury qualities and (for the first time) the granitic lick I so desire in a Cru Beaujolais. Delicious! And has years to go.
I want to kinda laugh as I managed to bring this wine into the last store I worked at - this wine is difficult to get in France let alone Canada - and because I’m not there to talk about it, it’s still available. I’ll be going back to get some more for sure. Such great value and just starting to show what J-M Burgaud is capable of creating.

This wine is in a great place right now, with a little exposure to air - say, 20 minutes in the glass or 30 in a decanter. The preliminary curtain of sandy tannins parts, granting ingress to succulent, juicy fruit flavors which lean cherry, and engaging attention by the contrast in textures. Fine acidity and good balance, everything very nicely proportioned, no flab. Only seven months since my last bottle, but this one is much better than I recall from that sample; sipping after the wine had been in the glass for a bit, I really had to do a double take, so surprised was I by the quality and impact of the inner fruit. My favorite Beaujolais, I'd say, or maybe tied with Foillard Morgon du Py, which offers great flavors and textures in a distinctly different presentation of Gamay.
  • Jetjock commented:

3/24/23, 7:01 PM - Very good TN. Cellaring very well, too, w/plenty of time left in the btl. If one could take only one producer's Cru Bojo on the "Arc" that had to sell for well under $30, this would be my pick. A good pour while it's raining, it would still drink well after the waters were finally gone.

Redolent of plums and cassis, with oak and tar and tobacco, some spice and a slight gamey note. Lots of extraction on this. It’s still quite young, obviously: I wouldn’t say that the oak is entirely integrated at this stage and the tannins are still pretty damn thick. But it’s absolutely brimming with promise. It’s rich, it’s fruity, it’s round, and the alcohol, while high, isn’t obtrusive. Give this another 2-3 years and I bet this will be fantastic.

Nice nose of white pepper, raspberry and a hint of brett.

Spicy palate with fine, grippy tannins and racy acidity. Tart red fruit dominates.

Medium finish, red fruit and white pepper makes a return.

Was rather dumb. Last bottle I had 9 months ago I felt it was blooming out a bit, but this one wasn't. Was decanted a couple of hours in advance, was very dumb on first tasting, but it did open a bit with shaking and later in the meal. But then drinking it over several subsequent days didn't really get any better. In fact it became rather unpleasant by the end.

In a funny place right now. It is clearly still early in its life, and I have another 6 bottles in remote storage and I guess they are going to stay there for a few years.

1st of 4 bottles, purchased over a decade ago. The wait was worth it, this Graves may be made with a slightly modern twist, but the Bordeaux roots are deep and well integrated. Black and red fruits with a hint of Sur Maturite, showing earthiness, anise, espresso grounds, and sauteed mushrooms, with medium acidity, and a long and knockout finish.
This is drinking beautifully right now and will likely to continue to do so for another decade or so. Love it.

Old school? I’m in. This is unbelievable value for an introductory level bordeaux. Lots of young tobacco notes intermixed with savory, chocolaty, and toasted herbaceous Cabernet notes that are laced into graphite. This is serious shit for the modest price. Bordeaux 2019 - 15 red / 2 white / 4 sweet wines: UCG Arrivage Tasting. A few observations on the red wines: 1) Overall quality: 2019 is indeed another great vintage for Bordeaux reds. The quality was good across the board. 2) Ripeness: 2019 is less ripe than 2015/2018. Out of 15 wines only one (Gazin) showed overripe. But 2016 still wins in this category with the freshest and purest fruit expression. 2019 is in between 2015/2016. 3) Complexity: 2019 will not reach the heights of 2016 but is almost on par with 2015/2018, although the latter one will need to flesh out for quite some time reveal all nuances. 4) Precision: I found superb precision in many wines, however, again not on the level of 2016. 5) Structural frame: The tannins are ripe and very fine, the acidity is generally high (but not as high as in 2016), the texture is nicely airy (unlike with many 15s/18s), no alcohol heat (a problem in 2018) and the wines are very harmonious. 6) Best wines tasted were a magical Canon (96+ pts), a superb Leoville Barton (95 pts). Unfortunately, they were all out of Pichon Lalande - supposedly one of the wines of the vintage.

TN: I haven‘t tasted this wine before (other than corked bottle of the 2010) and hence didn‘t know what to expect. This was one of the positive surprises. Very intense, expressive on the nose and palate with lots and lots of power and aromatic pressure. Very dark fruit profile with ripe but not too ripe blackberris, cassis at the core. Additional layers of herbs and crushed rocks. It is one of the more powerful wines tasted today, probably also a touch riper than most left banks but everything is still on the right side of things. Easily 93-94 pts which is even more exciting considering the low price of this Cuvee.

Retail $25. 100% Gamay. When I first started leading bike trips in France, Beaujolais was usually my go-to region when ordering a bit of wine for the table. Why? Well, it was approachable (rarely too tannic or obtuse), affordable (on most wine lists in France, a good cru Beaujolais can be had for under 40€), and exceedingly food-friendly. (Beef, chicken, most pasta? You bet.) My first choice, back in the day, was Chiroubles since it was the lightest of the Crus (due to its elevation) and easily the most fun to say. My second choice? Brouilly. Just slightly beefier than Chiroubles and almost as fun to say. This iteration from Blain Sœur et Frère (sister and brother) is right in that wheelhouse: fruity (plum and dark berry) but not over-the-top, plenty of acidity to cut through most meals (grilled chicken? yowza), and a finish that lasts long enough to keep the dinner table chatter interesting. thedrunkencyclist.com

Real treat drinking this. I remember opinions on this wine and the vintage 2009 in Beaujolais being all over the place. From vintage of a lifetime to "atypical".
When opening I was thinking about the old saying, age a good Bojo and it becomes a Pinot Noir. In this incarnation the wine has not reached that stage, this is Gamay, this is Beaujolais. Fruit is plain lovely, ripe red currant, raspberries making love to flowers and fresh herbs with a nuance of licorice growing nearby. Yes, concentration and extract are on the high side for a typical old school Bojo from way back when, but a cleansing acidity with shades of oranges and mandarins keep things very fresh. Then at the end a sledgehammer of granite descends on your tastebuds.
13,5% alcohol used to be a lot for a Beaujolais, but now rather is towards the low end in many recent vintages. Brilliant wine, too bad it was my last one. Stored cool this will probably have life for at least another 5-7 years.

How it arrives in our local wine shop for $20 boggles my mind. In a great vintage, buy by the case and enjoy all winter with your stews, roasts, and chilis. Bravo!!

2/10/22, 6:41 AM - Very good comment. This wine is a great value w/a great story. When I first started to buy it years ago, Jaume family had it labelled as a CDR Villages. A few years ago they changed it to just a CDR. I queried them as to why and they wrote back that they wanted it to compete with Coudoulet de Beaucastel, which is also "just" a CDR. Have a case of '16 in the cellar that will sit until mid-2020s. In the interim, am buying later vintages at "bon prix" to drink as a go-to winter pour.

Un très bon cru bourgeois à un prix tout à fait abordable, de la belle ouvrage!

Much loved. Juicy, with an acidic backbone, velvety tannins. Morphed over three nights.

Beaujolais are often hit or miss for me. But Brun never disappoints me.

My previous experiences with Beaujolais weren't very good, although the stuff I tried earlier was nouveau. I received an email extoling the aging virtues of Beaujolais, which spiked my interest and I decided to give it another go.

Day 1: Too much bright red fruit for my taste, preferring something more rich. The tannins are not very well integrated into the wine. Seems I am tasting the wine and the feel of the tannins as two distinct things. Ready to give up on Beaujolais again....

Day 2: A surprise. The bright fruit notes had settled down giving the wine a richer feel. The tannins are still quite noticeable, but seem nicely integrated.

I think this wine would do best with some more age on it. I will likely purchase another bottle or two and forget about them for some time.

1/22/22, 9:25 AM - Good observation. See J. Gilman's tasting note, drinking window and score. This wine needs to sit in the cellar in order to get your money's worth and full enjoyment of it. Patience pays off w/many of Brun's wines.

Black cherry and briery black raspberry fruit with fennel, lit cigar, dry forest floor and mushrooms. Medium bodied, powdery tannin with great acid, length and complexity.

A really great bottle, in a really fantastic place right now but with all the stuff it needs to keep going. Better then a lot of Burgundy and half the price, great value!

Nose of dry currants, dry cherry, and heavy tobacco leaf aromas, with a hint of hot stones. Palate has more tobacco, singed earth, red currant, and cherries with a smoky backbone. Big earthy finish shows some drive, with more tobacco atop firm tannins. There's a narrow range of flavors here but it's powerful and well done. However, there's already not much fruit left so aging will be a question of palate preference. Personally, I'd drink in the next three years.

12/5/21, 6:08 PM - Just drank 2nd of 3 btls and concur w/your note. Very good aromas & slightly tannic on the back end. Good QPR but later vintages, like '19, will need cellaring to get the best from this producer.

We find Belle-Vue always steady - good value, nice balance, and worthy of some space to lay in the cellar to age. The '09 is a great example of a better than average Chateau in a very good year. The nose is distinct, hints of dark fruit, medium finish with flavors of dark cherry. It has hit the end of its window in terms of improvement IMO. It will hold for another year or so, but it is time to drink up.

I picked a case of this wine up upon release in 2012. It has been good all along, but in recent years is way outperforming its price point. I have decanted all recent bottles for at least 2 hours. I believe that is the key to why it is so good, and might also explain why my recent year ratings have been consistently higher than most other cellartracker.com tasters.
  • Jetjock commented:

5/24/21, 4:14 AM - Good points. One definitely gets money's worth w/both patience & decanting of a well made BDX. And, it doesn't have to cost a fortune!
