14.9% abv. Medium-light ruby, very aromatic. Rose petals, cherries, ripe plum and Christmas spice highlight a well balanced, very tasty palate impression. Great now and over the next several years.

2016 Jason Stephens Winery Chardonnay Estate Reserve California
I first met Jason Goelz in San Francisco at a steak house near my hotel. He is a charming fellow, with a beautiful winemaker of a wife (her brand is Alara Cellars). The fruit all comes from the Central Coast and the wines are magnificent. This Reserve Chardonnay is not an exception: fruity with just the right amount of oak, this is a middle of the road Chardonnay. It is not exceedingly fruity with no hints of wood, but neither is it an over-the-top buttery, oaky Chard that turns off so many these days. It is a Goldilocks wine, so to speak, that seems "just right." thedrunkencyclist.com

This wine was a bit too cold when I served it. Some lemon and mineral, not ripe or over oaked but maybe it could be a little more intense.
  • triley commented:

3/1/15, 10:22 PM - Pretty sure Stony Hill doesn't use any new oak. Old, neutral only, for texture, not flavor.

3/2/15, 10:03 AM - We might be saying the same thing, but I was just struck that oak even got mentioned. When it comes to Stony Hill, oak rarely enters the conversation. That is all.

Great wine, big & bold RRV Pinot with luscious fruit and silky smooth finish. Finished 1st in a 9 person blind tasting against another RRV Pinot and 2 WV Pinots. 2nd 2012 Atticus WV, 3rd 2011 Martinelli Moonshine Ranch RRV and 4th 2010 Ken Wright Freedom Hill.

11/25/14, 9:56 AM - The Hirsch is not a RR pinot. All its fruit comes from the Hirsch vineyard on the True (far west) Sonoma Coast, many miles from the RR AVA.

Red
2007 Domaine Ilarria Irouléguy Tannat Blend, Tannat
Ilarria's unoaked, Ecocert-certified blend of 60% cabernet franc, 15% cabernet sauvignon, and 25% tannat is a refreshing and uncomplicated Basque wine with aromas of toast and dried cranberries and flavors of tart currant fruit, some fresh mint, and dried green herbs. Nicely structured – modest tannins, plenty of acidity; it stands up in the mouth.
  • triley commented:

9/14/13, 9:56 PM - Several websites indicate that this is 70% tannat, 20% cab franc, and 10% cab sauvignon. I think the tannins a bit more prevalent than "modest" might indicate.
