2 hour decant, and very little sediment. Layers of black and red fruits with some blueberries in background, ripe but far from overripe (which always surprises me for this vintage). Very smooth, with just the right amount of food-worthy acidity. Some vanilla Oak, pencil shavings and hints of tobacco.

From Magnum. Fill into neck. Almost no bricking. Still solid color to core. Lots of tobacco on the nose upon first opening. Lovely red and black fruits in soft velvety layers with some tobacco and dried herbs. Not the longest of finished but a very lovely wine. This Magnum still had another 3 to 5 years of solid form left in it. Add an extra point for ageworthiness.

Nearly at end of its ideal drinking window. Buttery smooth. Not much spice but long smooth tannins with layered black fruits that are very ripe but not jammy. Some vanilla Oak. A 20 second finish.

Even better than my last bottle. The PV dominates, but not in a bad way. This is certainly a different blend and that's what increases its interesting factor. Very smooth with overripe dark fruits in abundance without too much sweetness. Some sweet Oak and underbrush.

3 hour decant, and it needed it. Huge wine. Explosive and jammy blackberries and some black cherry fruit. Too much extraction for my taste, but no denying its quality. For others, it was their favorite of the night and they'd give it much higher scores.

This wine had some spearmint on the nose and some funk underneath. Some concern about slight TCA taint as it went into the decanter. 2 hours later, the TCA was barely perceptible on the nose, but still there. It did not seem to have a great impact on the palate. After 3 hours it was still only a slight TCA taint but was starting to flatten the flavors on the palate. 2/3 of the bottle was consumed nonetheless. Without the TCA, this wine was easily a 91 or 92 point wine. During the first hour, I'd have given it a 90 or 91.

Hour decant. Plenty of black and some red fruits. The Sangiovese comes through on the nose. Near silky smooth at this point. Very nice elements of dried herb and some sweet Oak. Very well balanced.

Side by side with the 2011. This wine had 2 hours decant and needed more as is continued to both soften and open up thereafter. A meaty Pegau with overripe red fruits and black fruits coming through the still firm but long tannins. I'll give this one another year plus before revisiting. Lots of upside here.

I liked this much better than my last bottle. 45 minute decant. The wine is starting to add some weight and gain more ripe fruit. Grenache red fruits come through. Near silky smooth. Very well balanced. Hints of white pepper and sage.

From Magnum #182 of 200. Into neck fill. Soft cork. Lots of film on inside of bottle. Color is still solid with modest bricking. The nose is over-the-top Oak resin. On the palate the Oak dominates otherwise solid black fruits. After time, some of the Oak blows off, but not enough to make this a top quality wine.

This bottle took about an hour to fully open. At first rather austere but as it opened ripe black and red fruits emerged. Smooth but with still present tannic backbone. Some dried herbs to got with the dusty tannins. About a 20 second finish and there is evidence that even more nuanced elements will come forward in time.

Solid cork and almost no sediment. Into neck fill. Golden color. Candied apricot, peaches and mandarin oranges. Some creamy vanilla. Plenty of unctuous texture but not too much glycerin. 40 second finish. Super.

Base neck fill. Bricking but no orange. 54% Petit Verdot truly dominates. Some blue fruits in background. A somewhat austere wine in terms of overripe Cali fruit, but plenty of character and nuance here. Smooth with underbrush, Oak, and hints of eucalyptus emerging. No reason to wait any longer. This bottle probably had more fruit a few years ago.

Into neck fill. Solid cork but for last 1/2 inch. Modest bricking and no orange/brown color. Teaspoon of sediment. One of our best recent bottles. Plenty of ripe black, red and blue fruits. Some dried herbs, sweet Oak, touches of tobacco and graphite/minerals.

Very top shoulder fill. Very cloudy but let sit for a week and the fine silt settled. More than a tablespoon of silt. Color showing a little orange with very modest bricking. Nice pencil shavings to go with still sweet black and blue fruits. Much better than I expected when first looking at this bottle.

From Magnum (51 of 100). Into neck fill. Near silky smooth. Ripe black and red fruits with some sweet Oak, and much more old school Cali Cab than expected, especially for this vintage.

Base neck fill. Soaked but solid enough cork. 2 hour decant. Just a little bricking but no orange. Tobacco and black and red fruits and flowers on the nose. On the palate, much the same but with a clear long lasting slightly sour cherry element after mid palate and through finish. Near silky smooth but with a still strong tannin backbone.

Ran it through a vinturi into a decanter. 45 minutes in decanter and back into bottle through funnel. This bottle was heavier mouthfeel than my last couple and the vanilla Oak was rather dominant despite the overripe blackberries (nearly jammy). Only faintest hints of dusty tannins. Very smooth.

Ran it through a vinturi into a decanter. 20 minutes later back in the bottle through a funnel. Still took another 45 minutes a couple hours later at dinner to fully open. Lovely blue and black fruits with nice herbs and earthiness. Long finish. This bottle still had another 4+ years of peak form. Not much sediment.

From Magnum. Solid fill. Silt sediment coating half the bottle with another tablespoon at the bottom. Ruby color, some bricking. This bottle was at the end of its drinking window but still had good ripe fruit showing, black cherry, blackberry some red fruits with some cedar, dried herbs and hints of Eucalyptus. Nearly silky smooth with good food friendly acidity.

Decanted for 90 minutes, and it followed the '94 Mondavi Reserve. The Montelena has slightly more bold and ripe black fruits than the Mondavi, which I liked and the finish was a little longer. Also nearly silky smooth. The is some sweet vanilla Oak in the background, along with dried herbs, some cedar and hints of graphite.

Ruby red - used a Coravin to access about 1/2 the bottle. Classic Dow. Very sweet red and black fruits but not jammy and loads of purity and elegance.

A horribly overrated wine. The 16% alcohol was relatively well hidden, but it still overcame the fruit. The wine developed a nose after about 90 minutes of decanting, but did not change much on the plate or nose over then next 3 hours. Silky smooth from the start which was lovely. A 40+ second finish which was enjoyable. The Syrah came through despite its low percentage. Overall, an interesting and every well made wine that was quite enjoyable, but it lost a point on the alcohol and was quite far from the quality of 2003 Rayas Reserve we had very recently.

A ridiculously overpriced wine, but it is still a very good wine. Blueberry compote on the nose with Oak. On the palate much the same with some hints of blackberries. Smooth but the dominance of the Oak was too much and took the score down a point. The wine did not change much over the course of a couple hours and I see no room for improvement.

Tobacco that gave way to mocha, earthy mushrooms, black fruits with sweet Oak, and then after a couple hours some dark cherries on the finish that lasted about 30 seconds. Not as great as the last bottle, but I've often found notable bottle variation from this producer.

Huge jammy almost candied blackberries on nose upon first opening. This wine took a couple hours, but it softened and allowed some more nuanced element to eventually come through. Hints of Eucalyptus mint, vanilla toasted Oak, and some sage. 30+ second finish.

This bottle was disgorged in Sept 1989 and you could see a little whisp of dark sediment stirring. The color had touch of orange, but was still well within its drinking window. The was unusually solid and the wine had not lost a bit of its bead. Truly amazing with cherry and some straw and citrus notes. Long finish.

Give it an hour of air and it softens dramatically. Plenty of ripe black fruits, ultimately near silky after 2 hours. 30+ second finish. The 15.1% alcohol you cannot discern until you walk away from the table. Some vanilla, black currant, and hints of sage.

Decanted for an hour but was ready as a Pop-n-pour. Blackberries, blue berries, hints of cassis; creamy vanilla Oak; silky smooth but the alcohol came through a bit more than expected and took this down a point for me.

Decanted about 30 minutes. A very interesting wine and like nothing I've had before. Despite some crème de cassis, I could not have picked this in a blind line-up as being Mouton. Cardamom (the spice) was showing in spades. How different. Still some very nice black fruits in there. Sweet Oak. Silky smooth.

Not quite sure what to make of this wine. For such a hot year the fruit is not overripe as expected and is surprisingly light. There is good acidity. Color shows no age and not a speck of sediment. The black fruits are a bit muted and up front. Slightly sour red fruits are at the finish. Some cigar box and sweet Oak. Had to tell if this wine will ever put on some weight and develop more fully. Drinking window could be 10 years from now or never.
