Cherries and berries, also a smidge of spice and cola and earth and heat on the finish, the latter no greater surprise with stated alcohol at 15%. Perhaps more to syrup than cola. Tongue coating dusty tannin. Hedonistic, heady, would be perfect Friday night fodder for me (it’s now Sunday). I’m almost seduced/pissed enough to bump the score up to 89.

Florals, just ripe berries and cherries slightly stewed, herbs, spice, savoury minerality. Fine tannin, balance and length excellent. Wife rarely comments on the wines I pour but felt moved to with this one “nice wine” and that’s all I really need to say. Touch and go for higher points as evolved pleasingly through the evening.

As per the label though others could fairly read more in to it. White peach, lemon zest, some cashew. A tad dilute or at least light, and a tad awkward, not quite the right balance between the lemon and the rest.

Mouthful of dusty drying tannin, bit too much wood, redeemed to a large extent by the concentration of black fruits and cassis, some mint. Difficult to score, not in balance but peering through the dust I liked the flavour profile well enough with lamb backstrap this evening.

Red fruits, dark chocolate, touch of confectionary, then earth and spice. Cat’s tongue tannins fan out fine on excellent finish. Perfect Friday night fodder for a couple of glasses, though slightly cloying beyond that.

Honeysuckle, marmalade & toast as you’d expect. Broad and lacking in the focus and zest that better examples/vintages would exhibit.

Juicy black fruits, sweet spice, cola, lick of savoury tannin, impeccable balance. So glugable, irresistible. Might include a bonus point for how it made my glass defy gravity and keep rising to my lips.

Heathcote Shiraz lite. Plums and spice for the most part, only just on the right side of syrupy. A little talc like tannin but really not much structure to speak of.

Ripe dark berries, blackcurrant. A little mint more to spearmint, and cigar box. Drying dusty tannin. Plenty of length. Notably the ripest Wynns black label that I can remember tasting, and in my view slightly the lesser for it. Tasted over 4 hours and didn’t change much though final glass the best... Reckon 10 years is not enough for these black labels, maybe 12-15+?

Cassis, almost essence of blackcurrant, violets, redcurrant, mushroom, mint, tobacco. Spread of talc like tannin and plenty of length. A funny sort of Cabernet it seems to me, but that’s possibly just a reflection of how few I’ve tried from the Yarra Valley. Complexity, quality, and enjoyment.

Oooh this is a good ‘un. Blackberry, cassis, and spice as per the label. Plus exactly what Marc described a month or so ago. Especially appreciate the burnt rubber descriptor. Purely as a note to jog my own memory, echoes of Clonakilla Hilltops and even the SV in the steely spiderweb tannin structure.

Plum, blackberry, and liquorice as per the label. Also meat and leather, white pepper and spice, plus some pretty overt apricot presumably from the Viognier. Silty shapely tannin and nice wash of acidity. Seduction plus but has the quality to match. Winemaker named on label as “who else” ... apparently Clonakilla’s Tim Kirk.

A cornucopia of dark fruits and spice. Perfume, freshness, vivacity, balance, chunky grip, impressive finish. Enjoyed one glass with dinner at the Ottoman restaurant, Canberra, must say it was a fine match. Another Canberra region winemaker doing great things with a blend, this time with grapes from Gundagai. ps. 20/09/2019 just purchased a couple of bottles and realise the label says Medium Bodied Red Blend, and have been told that Nick has relocated to Sydney and has a Light Red Blend on the way. Perhaps the previous vintages were labelled simply Red Blend.

Glorious. Still young and fresh and fairly primary with many years ahead. Blackberry, cola, Aussie bush, dust, sweet spice, balance, texture, length, and savoury tannin with structure that curls out, enfolds, and enraptures. After four hours more savoury, some Granita biscuit and leather notes.

Magnificent purpled crimson. Cherry, spices, some liquorice and jubiness. Light to medium bodied. Sparse talc tannin, fresh acidity, excellent balance, shortish finish. No idea really how to score first encounter with a dolcetto but the bottle is emptying rapidly - great to drink. 89ish and I wouldn’t argue with higher except for the moderate length of finish. Drank slightly chilled.

Floral nose though you’ll need to sniff to get it. Cherry, raspberry, thyme, earth, liquorice. Fine tannin like the grains from black sandpaper. Fresh wash of acidity, slightly juicy though this lessened with air. Medium bodied. Quality is clear but lacking a spark, for me. 90 it is, tonight... don’t know why I didn’t love it a little more.

Gentle yet dominant cassis for the most part. Also mint, tobacco, wallet leather, polished wood, mulberry, cherry. Kittens tongue tannin fans out, a touch drying, nice wash of freshening acidity. Maturing but won’t fall over any time soon. Never going to be intriguingly complex, but at any age a damn good workhorse red.

Pretty closed on opening, needs an hour of air to start showing its best. Gentle cherry, rose, spice, stalk, mulch, blackberry bush, spice. Outstanding shape, feel, and length. Would have liked to sit with this for longer, think it was only beginning to rev up as I finished my one glass, but that with a meal was my allotment.

Raspberry compote, plum, dark Milka chocolate (yes I know there’s no such thing), Akta Vite, bitumen minerality. polished wood. Grainy yet pillowy tannin. Balance and length excellent. So good now, 3 hours open, and improving with air. So seductive, I was 92 on this most of the evening but tempted to go higher.
