One very powerful nose!! I smell marmelade of dark forest fruits; bayleaf, cherry blossom a bit of "liquirizia" (i don't know the English word for that) and eucalyptus tones. very very interesting wine to sniff for some time. Part of the excitiment comes from that nice little bit of typical glue..
When coming back to it I could add leather and roses to the range od smells... just great.

In the mouth this wines strikes me as one of the most powerfull barolo's I've ever tasted. Little drop od sweat appear on my face drink, ing this wine...it really warms you in these cold days of winter. WOW... all those flavours just don't leave your mouth... I taste an enormous amount of fruit: cherries, red berries, blackberries and some sweet strawberries... the fruit is packed now in a tremendous structure of firm tannins. It is quite a job to taste this wine.... After a while i start tasting licorice, spices like cinamon and a hint of menthol.

Just take little sips of this monster of a wine.... We coudn't drink more than two little glasses... half of the bottle went back in the fridge for tonight. It just was too much...
This wine has a lot of potential.. the acidity can do with some mellowing down, the tannins need just a little softening and then.. well.. I am sure this wine will be breathtaking... On the other hand... It is pretty breathtaking right now..

Comes in my hall of fame....

Tonight I just wanted a mature Sangiovese for a change...
We had some red peperoni filled with minced meat, onion, sellery and garlic for dinner and I had a hunch this one wuld fit right to it. it did.

The shoulder glass I pured give very little on the nose. There was some red fruit, but it was somewhat in the background. there was some sewery note that showed the age of the wine and along with that we had a little leather and baked mushroom.
On the palete this shoulder glass delivered a lot more. the was a very nice tickly fresh acid note at the tip of the tongue and a ton of fresh ripe berries. some licorice, figs, mushroom, and a certain herbal note I could not put a name to. No way you wpuld give this wine 18 years based on the palate, nor on the color by the way.

The first real glass, with dinner, was served 2 hours later. The nose had really blossomed up and showed now also some white shocolate and some terrific barn yard notes of dreis grass and horse shit. but still all that fruit!! delicious. Finished with some leather, cigar box, wel leafs, it delivers just a great nose all together.
On the palate the wines shows its class as well: packed with supperripe berries, raspberries and figs and lined with smooth tannins and that super fresh acidity this wine is alive and kicking. a beauty that is now at its peak I guess. It will hold very long, and it will give a lot of pleasure (maybe different, but still) over 10 years minimum.

a monument for Chianti!!

Nice color for his age. still quite dark red at the center.
nose takes time to open up from sewer to an autumn forest after rain (with some sewer). leather, anice, dark fruit marmelade.
the taste is just great. still very fresh and alive. This wine really has reached a second prime in its live. just a great example of an aged Brunello.
nice acidity. tannins completely integrated.

very very nice.

Absolutely Amazing Wine!!!

opened 2 hours prior to drinking (no decant)

served blind to a winebuddy to me and he thought is was a supertuscan from 1990. Just to show how must power and fruit this wine still has.
the color shows some age of course, as does the nose.
but wat a fruit still their and what a balance still. just a very very good and enjoyable wine. sometimes these oldies can be a bit tiring on the palate, but this stuff you ust keep on drinking.

nice licorice, forest fruits, a bit tar, mushrooms and figs.

Just a short up date on this 1997 Brunello.

tasted in two days.
the first day the wine showed more evolved than the second day.

The second day it was a delicious glass of wine. great fruit, nice acidity and soft, integrated tannins. medium length.
The nose (with some mushroom and under brush) is more evolved than the palate. The palate delivers nice fresh fruit, ticly acidity, licorice, plum and a hint of bayleaf.

I think the wine showed at its best that second day. I see no room for real imporovement, but it will hold 5 years easily.

ciao!

Textbook brunello!!
very very nice pure cherries, blackberries, hint of tar, bit of plum and some tobacco. fruit is dominant over those other, very interesting ingredients.
What struck me the most is the freshness of this wine. It is a real joy and you keep coming back to it.
after a very interesting nose, the palate fulfills the promeses you smelled.

finish is quite long and warm and rewarding. The tannins are there but not distracting to me. together with scidity that just delivers the right amount of freshness it forms the backbone of this great wine.
Sangiovese at its best.
I am not certain if the wine will really improve with age. it will change, it will soften down a bit and develop those out of this world mature Sangiovese notes... but it is just so joyful now...
It will keep at least 25 years. Il Poggione has a reputation for aging and the 2001 Riserva will prove why... mark my words.

I am certain now: Il Poggione is the QPR-king of Montalcino.
The normale was also a joy.

I thought is was time to check on this one. I know, still a youngster.
Montesodi usually has a great potential to age. a 1985 that I tasted last year was still a treat.

I think the 2001 ranks among the best Montesodi's sofar, aloong with the 1990 and 1985.
The nose is all about Tuscany: fresh fruity juice, some barnyard and freshly baked breadon the palate it delivers great finesse. blackberries, cherries, licorice, and a hint of toast. still the power of youth, but it is starting to show the finesse it will bring in a coule of more years. It has all the structure to age with its frim tannins and acidity, but for near term enjoyment the stuffing is stunning.

finish is medium - long. a little bit too alcoholic at the moment.

It will gain more balance with age, but the power of the wine simply gives a lot of pleasure now.

great stuff!!

This weekend my Rietines of this year arrived.
Rietine is always one of my favorite Chianti and the absolute QPR winner of the region for me.

Mario Gaffuri and his wife Galina run this estate since the beginning of the 1990's and over the years the quality has increased dramatically.

I am buying his wines since the 1997 vintage. Today, the Chianti Classico Riserva 1997 is fully ripened and a joy to drink, although I think that it can best be drunk soon. The Tiziano 1997 (a rather strange cuvee of merlot/lambrusco) is also a real joy and will hold longer.
The Chainti Classico Riserva 2000 is now in its prime drinking window, as is the Tiziano 2000.

The Chianti normale is all what a Chianti normale should be about: fruit! Year in year out Mario suprises me we his consistent quality of this wine. Ans the new release, the 2005 my well be one of the best so far, along with the 2004. the 2004 is still drinking nicely.

But the riserva 2004 (100% Sangiovese, barriqued) takes thing to another level and the 2004 is my favorite sofar.
I opened a bottle at noon for this evenings diner, and off course poured a shoulder glass.

What a nose!! class in a glass. You just keep on snifffing it. I smell nice crushed forest fruits, a tiny hint of cedar, some tobacco, barn yard.
Those very nice ripe fruits deliver a great sensation on the palate. great concentration and freshness at the same time. a nice tickly acidity to keep everything alive and kicking.
The wood is there but not prominent. just as it should be... delivering some extra flavors but not dominating the fruit. The wine has a firm backbone of tannins and acidity. The finish is poweful and long.
Although a joy now, I think this wine will easily last 10-15 years.

The 2004 received 3 glasses from the Gambero Rosso. It receives
