from Winery: 2013 La Zingara, Red Blend, Sonoma County "Kim's Cuvee"

This unique blend, with 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Franc, is our version of a super Tuscan! Lively red berry fruit and spicy black pepper notes. This wine has great acidity from the Sangiovese and firm tannins from the Cabernet Franc. This wine pairs great with a hefty pasta dish, such as a Puttanesca! Only 240 cases produced.

Rating is value based. Dark fruit and pleasant, with or without food. Not a lot of depth (or lingering) flavor.

WINERY NOTE: One of our most sought -after varietals,
Cabernet Franc grows in a favored block in our estate vineyard. The site slopes down
from Howell Mountain, shedding both frost and winter rains off of its slight slope. Native
Manzanitas shield the eastern side of the block from winds and dust. The vines grow in
volcanic soil and are trained into a split canopy, which simply mean that we let the main
trunk grow fairly high - about 1.5 yards and then train two sets of two "branches" out on
either side, effectively splitting the crop into two and reducing the shade cast by the
vine's own foliage. The result for us has been even ripening across the block and excellent
wine. The 2008 is no exception. The aroma is terrific - herbs, spices, violets and a little
sweet tobacco, which reminds the Happy Farmer of the pipe he used to smoke. The wine
is soft and elegant, with blueberries and a little bergamot (think Earl Grey tea) on the
palate. $45 bottle/$540 case. Club pricing $36/$432

WINERY NOTE: This is our second year making Verdelho and we're
hooked. We love this old Portuguese white varietal that was rescued by a group of
dedicated growers in the 1970s. Without their efforts we would all miss out on a fantastic
wine. The wine is full-bodied and flavorsome, with tropical flavors of pineapple and
guava. Careful tasters will pickup some honeysuckle and spiciness, both on the nose'and
on the palate. In 2011, we picked Verdelho at a slightly higher brix level. The added
ripeness has resulted in more dominant fruit flavors. This is not a wine for aging - enjoy it
in the next few years. It's perfect for an aperitif; and the pleasant acid levels also make it
an excellent choice to pair with dinner - especially a rich dish or something with spiciness
or salt. $24 bottle/$288 case. Club pricing $19.20/$230.40
