1997 Harlan Estate The Maiden Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend

Eucalyptus, red raspberry, rosemary, deep red currant and anise. Tannins with a firm, chalky grip. Ripe black fruits on the backend that get bigger as the wine sits. A fresh pour revives all the nuances - should be drunk soon. Pairs beautifully red meat.

p.s. prime beef sirloin with king crab and grilled zucchini

Fantastic. Find it.

Needed a few hours in the decanter but what a wine. Nose was very tight initially but opens up to a beautiful bouquet of earth, red fruit, and thyme.

Palate is medium body, medium acidity, smooth tannins but still has some residual bite. Incredible transition from silk on front palate to bright red fruit and acidity on the mid palate.

Finish is very long with a bright freshness, bright red fruits, and a bit of drying tannins.

In an excellent position for drinking right now. Certainly needs a few hours decant but what a wine. Might need to get a case.

Light ruby color. Red tart fruits, stone, mineral, flint, light barnyard and hay. Subtle and graceful on the palate and surprisingly approachable. Smokey, blood orange, rock and light floral notes. This wine is extremely enjoyable and should be for years.

Rhônes are typically some of our favorite wines and seem to be more approachable than Bordeaux. Day 1 - lots of perfume on the nose mixed with underlying spice and earth. Quite incredible structure, but seems to need time to breathe in order to showcase it's full potential. We decided to vacuum cork the bottle and hold out for the next day. Day 2 - Earth, minerality, spice, mocha with some light perfume that has mellowed out since we opened it yesterday. Raspberry and mild strawberry with some lovely herbaceous notes. Seems to be lots of flavors pouring from the glass in a layered, elegant fashion - not over the top, just wonderful and exciting. The extra day really allowed this wine to evolve.

Drinking from a spilt very young, but wanted to see where it is now knowing how well it ages. Subtle nose of red fruit followed by bright cherry cola. Strawberry, tobacco, licorice and red plum. The higher alcohol needs time to integrate and allow the tannins to soften though you don’t get the intensity you would with a higher alcohol new world wine. This wine will become more complex over a decade or more, but exciting to try at this stage. Looking forward to trying this again in a few years.

    11/13/20, 9:58 AM - anthroman, I think the wine will be in a great place in 2023, especially if you're looking for the younger qualities, but we'll be sure to pop another .375 in a year or so and report back.
