Disappointing if compared with 2011 vintage. Nice wine, easy to drink but the flavor doesn't last enough in your mouth to remember it....

11/7/14, 9:29 AM - I have 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 vintage. Loved the first 3. Haven't tried 2011 yet. Glad you voiced an honest opinion about the 2012 vintage. Le Difese is another affordable Super-Tuscan if you are unhappy with Le Macchiole Rosso. Not all of the Le Macchiole have traces of the Sangiovese grape in them. I heard 2012 is a hit or miss in the Bolgheri region.

I'm joining the 90 crowd but not without some trepidation. Upon opening the first whiff of this wine was of varnish. After a few minutes the strong varnish smell that practically incapacitated me had subsided a little and after another 20 mins the stuff was ready to finally drink (meaning I could get past the varnish smell to actually approach my lips). With varnish notes for the first hour, this wine was tight, tart and unforgiving. Yech.

Ok, so FINALLY, two hours into the thing, varnish gone, tighness replaced by dark savory notes, minerals and earthy fruit, the wine begins to open up. There is still a certain astringency but the underlying fleshy-ness is appealing and the sense of Sangiovese-ness is finally present. Lots of tannins that need to be resolved, I think another decade can't possibly hurt this stuff.

This is NOT a Chianti for the faint of heart. Its a take no prisoners style, an old world style, that many (most I suspect) just are not that use to anymore in watered down, new world land.

Lets say that at this point its a wine I respect tremendously, rather than actually like.

All I can say is what a difference a year makes - and this is not a good year for this. Oh well.

3/29/11, 8:14 AM - Can you please be more descriptive. Some like yourself are drinking the -04 vintage early. I'm a big fan of Il Palazzone estate.

unpleasant. Just saw dssmith's review and I also bought 4 of these on sale at PLCB. Something is very fishy here as we both disliked the wine and had similar notes, while most other found this to be a declassified Barolo of high quality. I'm thinking the state of Pennsylvania was bamboozled here.

The scores seem all over the place for this particular vintage, I'm not sure why. Initally it was quite fruity, cherry with a short finish, very good with a tomato-y based pizza. After being decanted for one hour it turned into straight bologna, or cold hot dog aromas. I'm not kidding here folks. It was a quite unattractive aroma for me, and I couldn't detect any fruit...how sad.
