I've sitting on these wines for a will and this may be one of the youngest of the bunch. i opened on a decade ago and had to step back a few feet as it uncoiled for an hour or two. This time it was just right from the cork pop to the glass. Great hearty cab with a sturdy backbone and structure. Good stuff and very tasty.

My last bottle. Upon seeing my previous note and my 2 year prediction of goodness I had to give it a try. It was still going strong. I double recanted it after a P&P did not provide me the expected nose and finish. After the DD it was delivering on all sides. What a mouthful of dark berry goodness. A bit of saddle shop and strong tannin present. I love this winery and wish this blend was a more regular offering.

Back for more as we enjoyed our nearly last bottle. It was amazing. Better than before. The perfect pairing for a multi course meal when you don't want to bounce from Red to White and back. It's softness and structure paired well with everything from oysters to Duck.

Missed the train. I hung on too long on this one. I tried it years ago when I first bought 3 and it was as tight as a drum. It would have taken a week to uncoil. Put it away and for a 2004 I thought it should be ok. WRONG. I was as tawny as tawny can get and past madeira and on the way to Port ville. Oh well. Better dig out that Velvet Glove and see I sat too long on that one as well.

Me likey, still a great wine. Lots of dark blue and red crimson fruits are swirled together. Great dusky nose. Drank over 2 days and even better the 2nd. Not in any way a 2nd to the namesake wine. It stands alone and is equally forceful in this vintage. Go get one if you can.

My penultimate bottle. It is still hanging strong. Great dark cherry nose and good structure with a bit of graphite and cedar. No sign of tawny or prune. Looking forward to the last bottle to come.

Wasn't expecting much as this was misread as a 2002 vs the actual vintage of 1998 (Common error with Heitz labeling). It still delivered in an unexpected way. I was time pressed so double decanted it to and from the bottle with my Winebreather Carafe. Earthy and dusty. Lots of tannins, sort of Brunello from Rutherford.

Inky and plummy. I lost the sone in the inventory and probably waited a bit to long. It was good the first day and so so the 2nd. I have my '07s and will be trying those next.

The is juice that continues to deliver. Absolutely Good Stuff Maynard! A bit of leather and graphite as well as dark stone fruit. No Plum just Dark Cherry and current. This will be good for a few years to come. Go get some or drink it now. Either way it's a winner.

Resolved tannins with an almost tart cherry first fruit and a soft dried dark fruit and river stone finish. It is holding up well and so different that California or other new world Syrahs. A nice divergence from big hearty syrah of the new world, always nice to go back to the begining.

Well rounded Cab with resolved tannins but lots of body and structure. Celia knows her stuff and her stuff is well past good Maynard! Blackberry pie with a great nose and a warm chewey finish. love it, love it, love it. I have one more and I'm not sharing.

My go to Cab for my friends who seek a "softer" landing on their palate. Not a Bordeaux blend but just a gentler style that many assume is a "Left Bank" effort. This 2001 is still holding its own. It's inky and full bodied. Lots of black cherry and cassis with soft tannins and a touch of pencil shavings. Go get some for your cellar!

Totally Dr. Crane. Nose of Cherry and crushed rock with the same on the palette added with graphite and dark currant and a hint of licorice. My 2nd favorite vineyard and a very good/well made wine. Fully integrated tannins and smooth without being flabby or soft. Still peaking and my last bottle oh well gotta get me some more Maynard.

Great bottle of wine and showing very well. The nose was really special with with a whiff of cocoa and dark fruits sort of a cross between Oakville and Rutherford. Dark juice with plenty of structure supporting soft resolved tannins. The personal wine is very enjoyable and is lighter than a lot of TRB hired efforts (Schrader, Outpost, GTS etc.) and so it is closer to Roundpond but easily stands above that wine. Nice finish with good acidity and was as good on the second day as the first. Go Get Some!

Digging back into the B&H middle year editions. This '02 is still drinking well. Not officially a Cab due to the 50/50 split with the Fran brother. Not as nuanced as the TK version but still a good pour. The nose is better than was the last time I had a bottle back in 2015 as the Cab Franc take first chair. I bet there are is least 3 years or more of life in this juice. Lots of dark fruit and the turn towards the right bank funk as it rounds the bend of peak maturity. I know a lot of folks think the Alcohol is to high throwing the balance off center but I think the structure holds up surprising well. I dig these B&H wines in the 2001-5 zone. They are officially Good Stuff Maynard.

My second favorite behind their Sea Smoke effort. Still lots of fruit present and it paired very well with a Salmon Wellington. Very enjoyable and more Raspberry than cherry or other fruit. Acidity was still balanced and the tannins were fully resolved.

Very good to great. This Valley "blend" seems to have a bit of Rutherford Dust on the nose and tongue. It may not have the Mountain structure of the Big Brothers from Veeder and Howell but it is every bit as impressive and more approachable at this point. I very much enjoy this winery's product and I'm very stingy on who I'll share it with. Tonight it is just for me, myself and I and the 3 of us are digging it big time. Cocoa and crushed rocks with a bit of red dust on the back breath finish. Solid nose of dark fruit and big time garnet depth. I wish I had more. Got to get me some cuz this is good stuff Maynard.

Still tasting great. I think the Foxen versions from this vineyard cellar better than the mothership. Perhaps it's the maker? I do know this is as bright and fresh as a few years ago. Very de-lish. Raspberry and strawberry are center stage. Balance and acidity are in the right spot and the finish is silky smooth. So sad that the exchange is no longer in place because the comparative efforts are always a fun contrast in style.

This may be just past the peak but it is still very good and should be for another year or 2. . Tannins are fully resolved and the glycerin level make for a velvety viscosity. Cassis and dark cherry with a bit of other dark berries round a smooth slice of pie. Despite the alcohol level there is no heat. Enjoy this one time time special effort now and with just a spin it will open right up. I bought a couple of bottles years back upon my first visit to L'Aventure when the tasting room was in the old "hanger". If you are in the Paso zone this winery is a must stop and their new tasting room is grand.

I know it's rounded the bend a bit but L'Av is such a wine of great structure it still is holding its own with loads of dark fruit and cherry. Has taken on a tawny tint or any musty tinge. Enjoyed with some home made ravioli and it was very enjoyable. I recommend this winery as a must stop to anyone passing through Paso. I loved the old 'hanger" tasting set up but the new room is very nice and the staff is very accommodating.

Inky smooth goodness. This one took a long time to be released and even longer to come into its own. It is only just now leaving the backward stage and leaping into its own. Dark and smoldering, semi sweet but also rich and satisfying. Pair it or pour it. Either way it is smoking goodness. Well done Les. This one can rest and reward for years to come.

A great wine and it is nuanced today as it was years ago. It is running even with the Sea Smoke mothership. The dark berry fruit and dark cherry with a tinge of smoke. Good stuff Maynard. My last bottle and sorry to see it go.

I collected this winery very heavily for years. One thing i can say with confidence. Drink early. These wines with possible exception of the Stelling and maybe Dragonfly offering are not really cellar worthy beyond 6 years. In this case I know I waited a little too long. Don't get me wrong it's not bad it just not noteworthy. Starts to slide toward my Wednesday Wine category. Decent but I'm glad it didn't offer to friends. A bit musty/forest floor OMG is this a Left Bank with age? That's how I describe French to my Cali buds, tired over the hump Napa. Not bad just a different palette profile.

I might have waited a bit long on this one. Although the "Pros" say it should be just coming around i found it bordering on the tawny with a brickish edge. Maybe it is the Sangio component being nearly a fifth of the blend as it is far more brunello than it is a Cali Cab despite being more than 50% Cab. I enjoyed it with the deeply seasoned chicken dish but I think my palate just was geared up for a Cab. Very earthy and mature with a tinge of smoke and leather and dark currents. Not sure it will hold up until tomorrow.

It has been 2 years since the first bottle before cracking open the last of these gorgeous etched beauties. Drank opposite an '05 Schrader T6. The BV held it's own and delivered on the dark fruit and a bit of better balance on the nose. The structure and palate was not up to the Schader but not much else is. Still a great bottle of wine for the price and always fun to drink single vineyard, single clones to get a selective take on the Cabernet spectrum.

Drank this Clonal study against a 2003 Beaulieu Vineyard BV Reserve Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford. The BV held it's own but the Schader only continued to get better better as my own "study" progressed. I agree with others that the CCS is the best of this vintage in overall appeal. The T6 still is a bit of baby. A full and smooth body with some coffee and leather as well as mouthful of dark stone fruit. Balance is good but not as great as the CCS. Lots to chew on here.

My last bottle and it will be missed. Solid nose of both red and black fruits and a palate of mix of strawberry and raspberry with notes of vanilla and cedar. The 2005 has a very silky texture that is smooth and rich across the palate. MMM-good

I have held onto this for a looooong time. Great Value wine. I paid $59 for it and my snobby French loving friend would have sworn it was a 2002 Left Bank first growth. Yeah yeah I know but after all let's get real, decent to great Left Bank tastes like aged Napa Cali. Soft tannins and leather and cassis. Glad I waited. Good juice.

TRB makes the without a doubt the most OMG wine in this's was 740ml of liquid heaven. WOTN a friend said why are we drinking this so early? "It may be better in a few years", he said. I said and we may be dead tomorrow. It was friggin great. I would buy catsup if it said TRB had a hand in it. This was part of 75 cases of heaven. Chocolate, dark fruit and nothing but delicious. I have met many wine makes but never had the pleasure of meeting TRB. But when I do I will thank him for all the places he has taken me. If you don't dig this juice this juice then send it my way, thank you. I brought it all the way to Taiwan and it was without a doubt the WOTHN.

Finally opening my last set of 2005 and Frontier is leading the way. Great nose and super finish. Smooth and round without the "hump" in the middle. The cab franc is there in the background without having the tannin overload. Love this wine. Brought it to Maui and enjoying it with a nice piece grass fed Maui beef. Loads of dark cherry, cassis, graphite and blackberry.

A little of this and a little of that. Not sure where it's from but I do know where it's going...all the way down. This is my favorite Leviathan vintage. Good stuff Maynard. Dark fruit and licorice, dark sweet cherry. The Cab Franc on the nose takes center stage and is very enjoyable. It's a mouthful of Napa Valley all in one. I'm in Oakville, no wait there's Coombsville and all the way back to parts up North. Thanks for the tour Andy.

Back for another bite of the apple or should I say blueberry? The tannins are still very present and this is a bold and strong representative from Northern Napa. It showed very well will against a '07 Sherwin Reserve and '10 Caymus SS. I know a weird line up but something for everyone. I love the Solari. It is a mature and full bodied curvy thing of beauty.

Just past its peak and starting a down slope. A dusky cassis and dark stone fruit centric wine with soft yet strong tannins. It may still have some time left but it is moving in the downward direction from the last time I tried it 2 years back. Drink up. I don't think it will keep more than a day if already opened.

Another winner from the Greer vineyard in Rutherford. Pott does a great gob of delivering a dark sumptuous feast of a wine. This is just starting to hit its stride. Tannins have softened and the dark dusty fruit is something special. I love this site and the winemaker has made it better.

Perhaps I have been lucky with the B&H synthetic corks but it would appear others have not based on the number of "flawed" comments. B&H wines are best drunk young and I think the "Fruit Bomb" tag is usually well earned but I do like their blend stylings. This wine has held up well given the amount of sugar/alcohol. I found this vintage to be soft and lush without being flabby or tawny as some B&H offerings can be after too much time in the bottle. Lots of dark fruit, cassis, glycerin and viscosity on this blend. I do think it is probably rolled over a bit from the first time I tried it. I have some more recent vintages and will most likely enjoy them before they get this long in the tooth.

I have been a been a huge fan of this release since day one. It took years for many to come around to just how great this vintage was and is. Many initial ratings saw this as a sub 90 pt effort. This allowed a few of us to stock up at the release. The characteristic menthol is subdued in this release with the fruit taking center stage. This effort rivals the best Left Bank first growth efforts. Soft tannins and sweet stone fruits with just a hint of earthiness makes this a unique effort. I live for Big Napa Cabs but this one is not that style. It's a soft and nuanced style that can pair with almost everything.

Gold like color with soft bubbles and notes of custard and lemon meringue. Cellared this for a long while and have one more to enjoy. Debated on this or the '96 Krug for this evening and decided that this was the better pairing with the lobster tail and grilled carrots, delish. Some may think this bottle might be subdued but I found it to be refreshing and delightful.

Man o' man does Andy own the best dirt in Napa or what?! Missouri Hopper is another example. It may not be To-Kalon but it's damn close. This fruit in the right hands out of the right soil is a perfect blend of new and old world. Jonathan Maltus fits a spot nicely between Philippe and my favorite Napa Cab palate masters Celia, TRB and Jeff Ames. If you love French and you don't like Big Bad Napa Cab then pick this up. It will win you over on Cali Vino. Cassis, Boysenberry, floral notes with a bit of smoke and chocolate on the tail. My last bottle of '10 and I wish I had another 12.
