1999 Giuseppe Quintarelli Valpolicella Classico Superiore Corvina Blend, Corvina
With a pan-roasted veal chop and morels. I thought I had a couple of 2004 or 2005 Primofiore left in the wine fridge, but found 1999 Valpolicella instead. Given I was in a Quintarelli mood, I gave this a quick decant. The nose took a bit of coaxing, but dried cherries, spice, cafe au lait, and balsam notes emerge. The wine is rich and concentrated (and a broad 15 degrees alcohol), with loads of spice, red plum, dried cherry, and menthol notes dancing across the ripe, concentrated palate. Signore Quintarelli didn’t release an Amarone only Rosso del Bepe in 1999 and it isn’t hard to imagine some of what would have been the big wine having made its way into the “humble” Valpolicella or Rosso Ca’ del Merlo. The wine is delicious, if a bit zaftig for what’s on the plate, but a hunk of Vacche Rosso Parmigiana awaits, so there’s hope. As for the veal and morels, I suspect Primofiore would have been a prettier and more felicitous selection. And given that I have a couple of the Valpolicella remaining, perhaps Fall, polenta, short ribs, and porcini will prove more rewarding. And should you have a bottle, the structure is resolving nicely, but this shares more with Amarone than your typical Valpolicella, so plan your meal accordingly.

Very funky upon opening, then decanted for 3 hours before drinking. Strong volcanic ash, and some musty notes, but gradually clearing. Sweet fruits, dark and brooding. Still showing large structure. Succulent and powerful. At the 5 hour mark, it really started to shine. This has been a difficult wine to deal with through its long life, with ferocious tannins in its youth, its middle age, and only just starting to soften recently. This bottle, my last, was quite enjoyable and serious.

dried rose petal and a beautiful orange hue helped make this a favorite at Chevalier
  • bugdoced commented:

1/7/20, 6:57 PM - it meant that the fruit and the earthy backbone along with the tannins were no longer separate entities
The wine has evolved to the point of a seamless expression of both
This occurs for me as the wine ages and the various components integrate to the point where not only do they complement each other ,but they make the experience rise to a special level
Where one plus one now equals three

this is very weak compared to the bottle we had earlier in the year. I bought a bottle off WTSO in April '17 and it was really good where I agree with the 92/93 ratings, but purchased same wine from Winebid last month and it is very average (very average cab...for the pedigree) a very notable and distinct difference. Suspicious....89 points. Could bottlings be that different? My advice is buyer beware. The fruit and depth is gone. strange. it almost feels counterfeit.

Pop and pour. Wow what a disappointment. Felt that this wine totally underwhelms and lacks any acidity, complexity, or flavor for that matter! The nose is seductive with hints of vanilla, forest floor, and cloves - but on the palate it just flops. The hype around this wine I believe it too much. Maybe it was just this particular bottle, and maybe it was too young, still have 4 other bottles to try - but first impression is weak and felt totally let down! Looking forward to revisiting it, but fear that it will be more of the same.

This wine reminds me why I cut back on Shiraz years ago. A 15.5% fruit bomb with alcohol getting in the way of enjoying the wine. In fairness, it is relatively balanced by good fruit, powerful tannins, and reasonable acidity. Still, there is nothing remarkable about this wine, even after several hours of breathing, that would merit the $45-$50 price tag, especially compared with Cabs and Bordeauxs in similar price range. Now, I need to figure out what to do with the remaining few bottles. Argh.

After 1hr slow ox this was still tight with the alcohol standing out. After 30min double decant and cool down much more integrated. Colour tawny at rim, but doesn't look too old... Although thinner than I expected. Mature nose of forest floor and mushroom. Sweet, smooth and rich in the mouth with lots of sweet cherry and spice. Not very complex, better with food as there is a healthy acidity. With too much air (probably equivalent to 90mins in a decanter) it rather falls apart, becoming alcoholic and acidic. I love Quintarelli's style, but for me Dal Forno's 2005 Valpolicella is a far better wine and remains my benchmark (also similar price). This was ok, certainly best drunk in its 60min optimimal window but nothing special - and that's what the score is for. Maybe better a few years ago? From my cellar, pristine condition as usual. Drink now. Note to self: open something better for tomorrow night! That's 5 boring wines in a row. Btw: cheap looking bottle with green label, not the brown one showing on CT, and very little/no sediment considering age. Strange.
