We’ll, this bottle was much better than the disappointing one I had earlier this year Dark red purple color with minor sediment. Dark cherry, raspberry, plum, port, leather, earthy, silky. Big 15% but balanced. Not over extracted or hot. I think this is the wine at its best. Drink now to 2025.

Medium dark red color. Medium to full bodied for a Brunello, with rich dried red cherry (with some black cherry notes), some tobacco leaf, and licorice. Lush but not over extracted. Young but already excellent with lots of potential.

This producer and this wine in particular proves to be excellent year after year. Light red ruby color and medium bodied juicy red fruits (raspberry and light red cherry, cranberry). Very good acidity, well balanced Drink now to 2023.

Clear, medium red color with some bricking / brownish hue indicative of age. Medium bodied with pleasantly sweet red cherry and dried raspberry, earthy, a touch of barnyard funk (in a good way), moderate tannins and oak, balanced acidity with pleasant medium long finish. Quite good. Drink now-2024.

This is a very nice Tuscan blend. Rich red fruits but well structured. Quite good now but just entering its drinking window. 70% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. 14.5%. Lots of crossover appeal to those who like new world wines with the added interest (and tannins) of Italian wines.

Rich, young, sappy Paso Robles cab blend (well, 83% cab, 9% cab franc, and 8% merlot). Need more time to strut itself, but that would add a couple of points at most. 15% abv.

My last bottle of the 2010. I wish I had more because each bottle has been better than the last and will continue to improve with time. Classic Brunello dried red cheery fruit, some, and still present by moderating tannins. The Cascina Nuova was a good value for Cogno but it seems prices have been going up every year.

This is an excellent Zinfandel (well, 74% Zin, 15 Petit Sirah, 9% Carignane, 2% Mataro). Complex, layered and it will still improve with age. 14.8% abv. I have found this producer and wine to be consistently good across vintages, and 2017 is no exception.

I like this producer and this is normally a worthy splurge, but this bottle did not have the depth and complexity I expect from Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial. This was decanted only briefly at a restaurant before drinking, but others report longer decants did not help. It is possible the wine is in a "dumb phase" and it is relatively young. If I had a bottle, I would hold off opening until at least 2024 so it has a chance to develop some tertiary character.

Golden yellow with some signs of oxidation. Brief Auslese sweetness on the font end but uncharacteristic super short finish and oxidized at back end.

Not a regular fan of Veuve Clicquot, but this is the second bottle of Extra Brut Extra Old that I've had and I really like the richness, balance and refreshing acidity of this Champagne. 47% Pinot Noir, 27% Chardonnay, 26% Meunier. From reserve wines of 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 1996 and 1988. Dosage 3 g/l.

This was very dry and stark. Unripened citrus, tart, chalky and high acidity. Not picking up a lot of fruit despite the warm year. I prefer other no-dosage champagnes, but it may just need more time.

Decanted 1 hour. Classic nose but very light on the palette and lacking fruit and body.

Alas this latest bottle was devoid of fruit and seemed like all tannins. It was open only 90 minutes but I am not sure the tannins would have dissipated or the fruit emerged with more time. Other bottles I've had from this vintage were better. Drink now.

Tightly wound and just entering its drinking window, this entry level Barolo ticks all of the classic Barolo boxes. Red and dark cherry fruit, blackberry, tar, leather. Energetic with tons of potential that will give it greater scores with not one but still very enjoyable now.

This is such a well-made Zinfandel blend. Full bodied but elegant. Rich but balanced, with a complex sweetness and spiciness that is just hard to resist. I don't drink Zinfandel or Zinfandel blends very often, but this Ridge really shows you how good they can be, and it is a good value to boot. A nice alternative to Cab based Napa blends when you are looking for something different.

This was an excellent medium bodied but balanced Baraolo that was surprisingly accessible but certainly has good years ahead of it. Very expressive and refined and a very good value. Will seek out more.

This was significantly improved from the bottle I had last year. Crushed ripe red cherry fruit and and earthy element; a touch of Dr. Pepper but not in a bad way. We made with enough acid and spice to balance out the sweet red fruit. Quite enjoyable now but will do well through 2026.

Restaurant pop and pour. Probably too young because I’m mostly picking up astringent tannins and not a lot of fruit (orange peel as expected, light red cherry). Hold or give it a long decant. Will give it another go after a day or two. (Update: Better on day 2 with fruit able to break through tannins).

An excellent Barbaresco that is drinking well now but at the early stage of its drinking window with great potential. Abundant fruit but not jammy or cloying, earthy, with firm but not overwhelming tannins. Best vintage I’ve ever had from this producer.

What a nice surprised that this is showing so well at such a relatively young age. The fruit (plum, blackberry and black cherry) and tannins have some Pomerol power but are structured and well integrated. Still in the pricesss of coming together but quite good now. Very good value. 15% abv.
