Violets and red berries on the nose. Cranberry, raspberry, and spice. Light yet concentrated. It's a shame that this is my last bottle.

Popped and slow-oxed for 4 hours. Initial pour was closed. After 4 hours it had come alive and showed some nice BdM character.

Light ruby color, some hints of amber at the rim. Full aromas of Blackcurrant, some sweet tobacco and red licorice. Full bodied with lively acidity, fresh fruit and smooth tannins. A long finish with a spicy twist to it.

This wine will probably develop a bit more for the next few years and it has certainly the structure to continue on its current level for many more years to com. Drink now - 2020

Surprisingly good for a varietal known as a generic quaffer at Italian restaurants.
  • wineduggery commented:

9/15/14, 8:28 PM - Drank a lot of this while on vacation in Italy, and it was generic at best. Nice to see wineries shipping some of the best stuff to the U.S. to break up the stereotype.

This is one of the best rosés I've ever had from the U.S. (possibly the best). At a modest 11.6% abv, it manages to have mouthwatering aromas, and while pretty tightly wound on the palate, it also delivers lots of (delicious) flavors – from under-ripe peach to lime juice and more. Very clean finish with good vibrancy, too. It is also very versatile with food (we found it great on its own and with a diverse cheese course). If I could afford it, this would be a half-case or case buy for next summer. Pricey, though. And in this case, it's worth it. Excellent wine.

Red
2008 Peter Michael Les Pavots Knights Valley Red Bordeaux Blend
This is a soft, smooth wine with well-integrated tannins, but it has a jammy sweetness that dominates the fruit profile that I found very off-putting.

6/4/14, 8:57 PM - Agreed, especially given the cost of the bottle!

Big, modern style Pinot. 15.4% alc, and you could taste the heat. That being said, it was a pleasant bottle. No better than the Sonoma Coast bottling though, but much more expensive. Not worth it.

Simple, but satisfying.

3/26/14, 7:39 PM - Yes, we expected more too. I was a huge fan of the 2010 vintage of this wine. Noticed that you really liked 2011.

  • wineduggery commented:

3/26/14, 7:42 PM - I haven't formed a judgement yet of the 2012 vintage in CA, but I'm really liking it in Oregon. The basic Drouhin Pinot from Dundee Hills is a must!

Red
2009 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio Red Blend
Heavily extracted and oaky.
  • wineduggery commented:

3/26/14, 7:37 PM - Agreed! This wine was a pretty big miss for me and for the three others who tasted it with me. I noticed that WA rated this vintage of Clio much lower than others, so perhaps a bad vintage?

Definitely interested in the fun of trying similar bottles, and noticing the different reactions. Did you try any of the Bordeaux bottles that Asimov recommended in Get Out Your Corkscrew? We didn't get moving on it this month, but I think we will next month.

Elegant, but thin. Lacks the complexity that should be there at this price point. Got a little better after being open a couple of hours.
  • wineduggery commented:

10/30/13, 9:08 PM - I agree with your Merry Edwards appellation wines assessment, so I appreciated your comment. I think this was the third vintage of her RRV pinot, and I'm pretty sure it will be the last. Wife agrees. Just doesn't deliver for the money. I like her Klopp Ranch and Olivet Lane bottlings best, so hoping they will be better.

Middle of the road well made non-descript red wine. Not feeling it with these Bedrock field blends.
  • wineduggery commented:

8/10/12, 8:19 PM - Agreed. I think their field-blend Zins are over-rated. 85 might have been a bit harsh though.
