4/18/21, 4:33 AM - Drank with a big lasagne I spent all day making, and it was big and and strong and perfect with it!
9/1/13, 6:35 PM - Curious: do you mean it was tainted (cork, sulphur or air), over the hill, or just a bad wine?
9/2/13, 4:44 PM - Thank you. I'm just trying to work out what to expect, still!
9/1/13, 6:45 PM - I've had bottles of this side by side one of which was way more aged despite haiving been kept side by side. Amazing stuff, and it can stand being open for several days, such is its complexity! Helps to soften down its strong alcohol and kick when first opened too.
9/1/13, 6:41 PM - I've found I liked the Estate Zins less than his ordinary Sonoma Zin from 05. The Cabs and (aged) Syrah are definitely his best, though I'd recommend the divine Sauvignon Blanc, and many like the ports.
9/1/13, 6:40 PM - I found the 06 to have bitter tannins, so I'm laying them down for a lot longer. Sad yours was corked.
9/1/13, 6:37 PM - It seems to have much more tannin than fruit, but the tannins I had seemed so bitter and big I thought they'd last a long time. Your experience may be different: how do you think they'll not last?
9/1/13, 6:36 PM - Wish I'd more of these!
9/1/13, 6:35 PM - Ah yum! This isn't sleeping then.. still nice and fruity?
9/1/13, 6:34 PM - A good winemaker (Wellington) taught us how any year you can make a good wine, as long as you are flexible and intelligent with your farming nous! Great review, and I agree entirely thank you!
9/1/13, 6:31 PM - I left it too long though and by tthe next day it's lost its complexity! Lovely stuff though.
7/28/13, 3:08 PM - Glad you like too... but I' curious as to how you opened it by accident. "Oh doctor, I slipped and this cork just appeared in my hand"
9/1/13, 6:28 PM - Ha ha yes, me too. Fortunately I didn't find the sediments a problem. But next time I will decant also!
7/14/13, 5:53 PM - hi! I'm opening one soonish. How long before it got nice and open??
9/1/13, 6:27 PM - thank you. (except that this is very red! 8)
7/24/13, 7:02 PM - reckon it'll improve any more with age?
9/1/13, 6:26 PM - Thank you: worth knowing! I'll drink up.
7/28/13, 3:18 PM - How long did you decant it, if much, and what temperature did you think was ideal?
9/1/13, 6:26 PM - Thank you. these special ones are new to me!
7/28/13, 3:16 PM - Hot? That's interesting... you think it's losing its body too much or it'll still age nicely?
9/1/13, 6:25 PM - I seem to remember decanting helping, thank you for the feedback. Sounds like it has some time left to drink, which is good news!
7/28/13, 3:17 PM - I love your descriptions. I didn't notice this in it before but I'll try again next time. Turbo cherries too! 8)
9/1/13, 6:24 PM - My understanding of Zins has evolved since I last had one, but my rating was about the same (give or take a couple) I think. for me Zin is about the fruit forwardness!
9/1/13, 6:21 PM - is this going to age further nicely, you think?
9/1/13, 6:20 PM - no rating?
7/28/13, 3:19 PM - so, decant decant decant!?
7/28/13, 3:15 PM - wow.. not even peaked? What do you look for at the peak? I have one left, and like this a lot, but not as much experience with good champagne!
7/14/13, 5:55 PM - Aha, so it sounds as iff the naysayers don't know how to decant a syrah for air?
7/14/13, 5:53 PM - I found some variance too in my bottles.
7/14/13, 5:51 PM - Glad it's still ok, but every bottle I drink says the previous one was better!
7/14/13, 5:50 PM - Mine's losing its coherence. I haven't detected any smoke yet, and I hope I don't in any future ones but we'll see.
6/9/13, 5:03 PM - Oh, so perfect! So, how long a decant is it giving, and how long do you reckon it's still got?
6/28/13, 5:47 PM - big thanks! I'm so glad we can ask these things here.
6/28/13, 6:01 PM - that's great, thanks! I'll get to one very soon, I think.
6/23/13, 4:42 PM - It was a bit young last time I tried one. Is it more like in its prime? Did you decant long?
6/28/13, 5:59 PM - that's great.. seems like if you can drink it on day 3 it's still got quite a lot of legs left :)
6/19/13, 3:10 PM - You're the first person I'v seen on hre talking about dormancy. Do you have rules of thumb regarding when each year might go dormant, and for how long?
6/23/13, 4:52 PM - Wow, seriously thank you! I'm quite good at this, but such experience is going to take me a lot more years and fun! This is a great help: I have a very experienced American friend who has a rule of thumb for Napa cabs (7-10 years plus or minus a year), but nothing as detailed and sophisticated. Do you have a blog! And, OP (Blewis1041) I hope you are enjoying this, being your thread :)
6/28/13, 5:46 PM - thank you ,this is entirely wonderful! Do you make wine? This is a thread of wonder :)
6/28/13, 5:44 PM - I have four left! They were such fun in 2010, but they're still awake? Might drink one and keep 3 then... these tannins are soft rather than the bitter ones of some other PSes we know. So much nicer for me
6/28/13, 5:42 PM - I can't think it's still asleep at this age, but I did have some that did seem sleepy. I think sometimes they need a few hours' decant. Any experience from other years?
6/28/13, 5:41 PM - It looks like you had a vertical! Can you tell us your favourite year(s) and why? Love to hear, and which ones you reckon might last longer than the others!
6/28/13, 5:38 PM - Right, time to open my only bottle! how long did you decant?
6/19/13, 3:04 PM - thank you... How are the tannins doing? I've very sensititive to bitterness and 3 years ago they were way too much! And how long did you decant?
6/23/13, 4:50 PM - brilliant, thank you! I was waiting for news like this to crack some open!
6/23/13, 4:43 PM - It's hefty, but doesn't seem to have the complexity its price demanded. Thank you for the update!
6/23/13, 4:41 PM - Stop it! I'll have to open a bottle and I want to enjoy it forever. Cathy says it's her favourite vintage!
6/19/13, 3:06 PM - that's a pity. I've been disappointed with his Estate Zins, as the non-estate 05 was really very good.
6/19/13, 3:00 PM - You reckon this is just going to improve with age? I might just lay some more down...
6/11/13, 2:10 PM - Now after trying my second bottle I'm inclined that way. Still, I've had a lot worse, and the nose is great. My roblem is I don't know what a good one should be like.
5/22/13, 5:35 PM - a lot means an hour, or six? I have a love then meh relationship with Peter's Zins and I haven't yet got to grips with how to love them everytime!
5/28/13, 5:57 PM - Ha ha, perhaps! a whole day, eh? I'll have to remember that!By the way, why don't you usually Vinturi Zins? Just becaus they're usually fruit bombs?
6/6/13, 2:53 PM - That's interesting. It helps with tannins, but for me it really also helps open up the wines faster to ge the aromas out, and to remove H2S and sulphides too. For me all wines are better with at least 10 minutes of air!
6/11/13, 2:08 PM - You are a wise man. We must open some bottles together next time I'm back in town!
5/22/13, 5:44 PM - You could get his merlot to open up?How much air? I had serious problems with the 06 which was tight as a gnat's gnether regions.
5/28/13, 5:59 PM - I think the 07 is meant to be softer. Peter just said on the recent Wellington case woot that these vintages will easily hit (and probably pass) ten years ageing. I think the 06 (and 07) could be wonderful. I'm a fan of St Emilion at 10 or so years, so...Incidentally, if you end up with too much 09 Merlot I'll take some off your hands :)
6/6/13, 2:42 PM - Ha ha, yes indeed!
5/28/13, 6:13 PM - Did you want to make a private tasting note? You can input that in a different field in the drinking window.
5/28/13, 6:11 PM - Sounds as if it's past its drinking window!
5/28/13, 6:10 PM - Sounds great. How long do you think this will cellar for? How are the tannins?
5/28/13, 6:08 PM - I haven't tried this yet, but what kinds of things do you mean by more modern in style"? This is to help me understand how it connects with the wine when I try it! Everyone loves this and I'm looking forward to it, so the more to expect the better.
5/28/13, 6:03 PM - Wonderful. Do you remember how long you decanted for?
5/28/13, 6:02 PM - It sounds it's as good was it was in 2010. Glad I have a few left!
5/22/13, 5:40 PM - This is an awesome review! Detail, and time profile and everything. Thank you! But.. how can I taste the eucalyptus when I open it.. what does that sort of taste like? I'm afraid I'll miss that...
5/28/13, 6:00 PM - I shall try to. And see if I can distinguish it from Rutherford Dust! :)
5/22/13, 5:30 PM - Reckon it might develop more complexity with age, or if this is a good easy young drinker one from PW?
5/28/13, 5:55 PM - Thank you. Yes about what I thought but I appreciate the information enormously. I know his single-vineyard ones can age a lot longer, and thought these would be for the medium term :)
5/23/13, 3:12 PM - Any alcoholic heat? Thank you for the decnating time BTW!
5/22/13, 5:50 PM - It's still young-tasting then? I was wondering if I should start to drink mine, but I can keep cellaring them!
5/22/13, 5:48 PM - It sounds as if you know your stuff. Do you think this will keep further.. And .. who else are the classics if I want to get some really good wines for comparison?
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
