A Christmas Limerick (It sucks to waste 325 bucks)
A magnum of Estate Montelena
Would go great with my Navidad cena,
But my guests' hopes were humbled,
When the rotten cork crumbled,
And the skunked wine went right down the drain-a.

2003 Château Monbousquet St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend
Had with dinner in a French BYO in Philadelphia. Started off a bit restrained but opened pretty quickly (no decanting involved) to show luscious dark fruits, soft tannins and a medium bodied nose. This is in a great drinking window. No signs of being too old so should keep for quite a while.

1964 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon Chenin Blanc
Offered a Loire wine by my host, I was not expecting a 49 year old wine that reminded me of a very mature sauterne. Absolutely delicious. Orange/golden color with an almost syrupy consistent.

There is a high likelihood that this is earliest vintage I have ever tasted. I was only 12 when the grapes were harvested.

4/1/13, 7:29 PM - I have never had it before so can't offer a suggestion as to whether it will age any further. This bottle while seemingly fully mature did not seem to be about to turn.

I should have purchased more of this. Very good Chiati Classico. Just a bit of oak but well integrated. This one had ten years of age - and showed well. Probably would have been served well to have a few hours of decanting. Very typical of a good Chanti.

Brought to Gilmore's in West Chester, PA for my wife's birthday dinner, this CDP was stunning and an excellent match for her duck and my venison. Upon opening, the nose was immediately bacon fat, which quickly blew off with 15 minutes breathing. After that, the nose was wonderful ripe raspberry, game, earth, dark cherry and iron/minerality. The acidity and tannins were in perfect balance and the long finish left me longing for more wine. I think we hit this bottle at it's ideal drinking window. It was showing just the right amount of maturity for my palate. It'll last 5-10 more years but I question if it could get any better than it was last night. Simply, a great wine to share on a special night.
